.444m draws first hog
« on: April 09, 2007, 12:40:08 PM »
Got my first hog,{with the .444m}, last week. I use the 18.5" "guide gun" and 280g LBT hardcast bullets @1235fps. 185lb hog was running by me at 30yds when I shot. Pig started to stumble after making it 15yds and was down inside 20. Boar never got up. Blood everywhere. Boar died from one shot through the upper portion of it's heart and a thumb sized entry and exit hole. Just about zero bloodshot. I will definitely keep using this load. My .44mag pistol will do the same velocity, but in this marlin it has half the kick of a 30-30 and is also very quiet, in comparison.

Well congratulations.  Sounds like a nice hog, and your Marlin .444 performed just right.

Well done...... You'll never forget your first hog hunt. But guess what? They get even better as you go along.

Don'tcha just love that 444.  That has got to be my most favorite 'go to' caliber for out to 200 yds (it's the eyes, not the cartridge).  My 3 just love the heavy thumpin' cast slugs, and so do I.  There is no doubt who is coming for dinner when I go hog hunting with a 444.  Mikey.

Good going...I got my first hog in northern Indiana back in the 60's. Most of out group was using pistols. I was using my .45 acp. Had a blast...what a hoot. Now I have my Marlin 35 Rem for hogs. Should work just fine.  Again...congrats on your first hog........

Outstanding work, fellow SwampThing.  You cannot go wrong with Marlin's "Hammer of Thor" 444.  Keep up the good work.

Hunter:  was that question directed to me????  I use Beartooth Bullets data and slugs.  I have 3 444s.  One lovesheavy (335 gn) .431 dia slugs at near 2300'/sec (long barrelled rifle).  Another, a Traditional Rifle (20" bbl) prefers 300 gn .430 dia slugs over one of the Beartooth powder charges for (fergit which) around 21-2200'/sec; the Timber Carbine doesn't yet know if it likes the 300, 330 or 335 gn slug.  My 444's are Winchesters.  Beartooth developed his data with Marlins, demonstrating that you can shoot cast slugs from a microgroove barrel very accurately.  HTH.  Mikey.
