Twist Rate
« on: May 26, 2007, 04:30:45 AM »
Veral,
I have a DW 41 mag, with a 18 3/4 twist rate. I have cast performance 250 wfngc. The best groups at 100 meters run about 3.5", with velocity between 1200-1400 fps.Do you know of another cast bullet of this weight that might work better in this twist?  Thanks!     John Roberts

If the handle of your gun were in my hands, 3.5 inches would be perfect!

What I'm  getting at is, what is your capability with a revolver?  They aren't the easiest thing to shoot tight groups with at 100 meters!  If you have proven that you can shoot tight with any other revolver or load, then I'd suggest an LFN in 230 to 250 gr.  It is capable of an inch fairly regular, and two inches consistently at 100 meters, if the gun is lapped,  if the cylinder throats are slightly larger than the barrel, if the bullets are carefully made and are precisely fitted to the gun.     --   I've spelled out perhaps a bit more than one can expect with an over the counter gun, and with commercially cast bullets, which Montana bullets are, though they are definately of very high quality and hand cast.

Well I shoot 2" average groups with 210 jacketed does not seem to matter what brand. 170's quite often average 1-3/4". All at 100 meters.  I was just looking for a bullet that might work better in my twist. That's all.        John Roberts

Great!  You must not be a heavy coffe drinker!

Since it seems that lighter is working best with jacketed, I'll change my recommendation to 220 or 230 gr LFN.  However, lead isn't as tough as jacketed, which can stand more battering from misfit or bore roughness, so be sure your barrel is good as I described earlier.  The above two weights are capable of an inch at 100 meters if the gun has good internal tolerances.

Okay Thanks! I will let you know after I order and try some of these. I don't know if my gun will get to 1" though, we'll see.         John Roberts
