What are the laws for the state of California?
« on: August 26, 2003, 03:11:15 PM »
A hunting buddy of mine is getting ready to move to California.  I have read in the past that Encores (pistol and rifle) are not permissable to hunt with.  Is this true?  Where is that stated if it is true?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you or in this case your friend really wants (needs to know) then ask a lawyer who practices in the state. DO NOT ask folks here on this site. Legal advice is NOT dispensed on this site. Opinions are. If you want someone's opinion ask for it. Don't ask for legal advice. IT ain't here.

Point taken....But my main search here was not for legal advice, just input from those living in the state that may have insight as to what the rules may be.  I have seen in the past many post from folks who say something about drop test and these firearms not meeting weapon standards for the state and such.  Im looking for comments so we have an idea where to start looking, not looking for hard and fast laws.

Yup that you should be able to get. BUT you asked what are the LAWS. Never assume advice you get on a forum like this is 100% correct and for darn sure not legally correct.

The guys living there can give you good advice. But as to legal questions your friend needs to see a lawyer. I "think" he will not even be able to take any TC handguns to CA from the comments folks make on here about ya can't get one from out of state after a certain date. CA has the most restrictive and esoteric laws in the nation.

I advised him this afternoon that a call to an attorney where he will be moving to is in order.  If that is true about not being able to bring them into the state, he will be heartbroken after all of the collecting he has done.  Hopefully it wont come to that.  Maybe he will let me hang onto them until he comes back..lol...who knows

I live in California ,Here is what I have seen .
As a resident You cannot import a contender or encore pistol , You can not buy one new , you may purchase them as a private party purchase only but it must go through a FFL . If you sell you encore or contender pistol to a gunstore or pawn shop they have to sell it out of state .you can however purchase a encore or contender rifle new .
I purchased a used contender pistol 13 mos ago and a encore rifle new about 6 mos ago.
Can your freind bring his guns with him ? I doubt it , The lawer will be able to tell him .
I am not a Lawyer , This only what i have seen.

Hi  :D  From the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia!!

My advice to your friend is to avoid Commifornia like the plage :x  :x  :x
The attitude here is ANTI-GUN and not very friendly towards the sportsman.  T/C will not sell firearms in this state (tried to buy two Encores). Soon to be X-Gov Davis and Diane Finstine Will not welcome you.  And the Gov hopefuls aren't looking any better for us here in the state.  I'm trying to find the number to a friendly lawyer that supports the sportsman, I picked up his lit. at the ARA match I attended at Prado Dam Olymipic Shooting Facility in Chino Hills a couple of weeks ago, just can't put my hands on it at this moment, but will post his name and numbers when I find it.

Depending on what area of the state your friend wants to relocate to, the outdoor facilities for shooting are dismal and difficult to get to (traffic & distance).  My commute to Chino Hills for Disneyland area is 45 to 60 minutes on a good day with average traffic.  Bad Days I'll stay home, as the commute would be in excess of two hours (less than 40 miles).

I'm planning on leaving the state next year for better (re. friendlier) areas.

Just my opinion

I live is so cal and you can bring anything you want into the state as long as you already own it as far as contenders encores go.  Assault type is a whole different matter.  Have your friend do a search for the california doj.  They have all the pertinent information there.  I even got around the drop test thing for contender handgun because my mom gave me the gun.  The best part, it is legal!  Dan
Gun control is shooting 40x40!
