I finally got a new scope about 6 months ago. I was tired of the old 3-9x50 so I upgraded to a 6-24x42. I was able to initially sight it in using black hills 50gr matched hp at 100 yards. Well less than a 1inch spread. A few weeks ago I finally got some leave and was able to go find some ground hogs.
I had recently reloaded some 50 gr v-max, 25.5gr benchmark, win brass, cci primer, 2.250 oal. Never had a chance to shoot much over 80 yds around the house, but I went to the field anyways. Did I mention that it was a bad Idea? After missing a varmint or two, I was steaming. I figured it was just me. After I had scared all of the animals away, I found an old chunk of metal and some cardboard. Walked it out as far as I could, 250m and set it up. I got back to my shooting positions and went to flip the bipod legs out and my bipod fell off. I guess after several years of use, the little hook that attaches to the swivel had bent out of shape and let go. Since I was going to do a quick site in, I opted for using by backpack instead of the more wobbly shooting stick.
3 rounds down range and I took the hike to the target. All 3 holes in less than and inch. Wonderful, but they were4 inches right and 8 low. I did not expect such a nice group giving it was 50 degrees and a nice swirling breeze. Adjusted the scope, sent 3 more down and took another hike. 2 in a single hole and the other was about 1 1/4 inch off. wind? trigger pull? Who knows? All of which were about 2 inches high. Adjusted scope again. 3 beer cans, 3 shots, 250m, dead on.
After that 2 groundhogs, one at 80m, one at around 160m. A crown at about 130m........... It's absolutely lovely to watch what happens to a crow when the 50gr v-max slams into it
Can't wait for the 600 m range opens so i can see what she does beyond 250m...
