Garrand question
« on: May 22, 2007, 09:16:58 AM »
Howdy ya'll

Got a friend that just bought a Garrand from a fellow. He does alot of his own work on his guns but knows when to send something to a gunsmith. He ran into something on this rifle he's not sure about. He took the forearm off and the barrel would turn. He didn't take it out but it turned a quater round with no effort. Turned it back to the correct position and replaced the forearm. Say's it's quite secure again.
Question is, is this normal? He had shot it with now problems but this is the first on he's owned so he doesn't know if the loose barrel is correct or not. Any help. Thanks

Andrew

Your friend should "right shoulder arms" the weapon, and march directly to the nearest gunsmith shop.  A long time ago, I spent some time in the Army.  During this period I must have torn down and cleaned at least a million M1s (seems like that many) and never seen one with a loose barrel.  Matter of fact, I have seen many guns with the barrel welded in place.

I WOULDN'T FIRE THE GUN UNTIL IT WAS CHECKED, AND AN OK GIVEN BY A COMPETENT GUNSMITH.

Thanks Rockbilly. Your one of the one's I was looking to hear from. Someone that has taken a bunch apart during their military time. I'll pass your info to my friend.
