At least the guys on the H&R forum were helpful about it...  ;)

My son had a 243 that tended to shift verticle as the barrel heated up.  It was fine for hunting deer but wouldn't hold its zero for repeated shooting.  He just put a 30 06 on layaway at Gander Mountain.  The store near us had the adult versions in 270, 30-06, 308 and 7.62/39  available for $149 also.

Sorry DavOh, I don't own a Rossi in .308 so I can't tell you what kind of accuracy to expect from that particular caliber.  I have seen several post on this forum from members who own both Rossis and H&Rs which state that their Rossis shoots as good if not better than their H&Rs.  I can tell you that my daughters .22 shoots MSN (minute of squirrel noggin).  ;D

Well, nearly 3 months later, the Rossi finally came home with us over the weekend.  She's all cleaned out and dressed up with a Bushnell Banner 3-9x40mm Scope.  Just waiting to get her to the Range and start breakin her in.

Range Report forthcoming.

Got that little Rossi to the range yesterday.  Did fine at 25 and 50 yds, but after the first shot at 100 yds, the scope came loose.  :(  Took me forever to figure out why I couldnt hit paper.  Went back to 25 yds and couldnt group less than 6-8". Started searching for the cause and just happened to put my hand on the scope while closing the action, and felt the shake.  Closer look revealed the front scope rail mounting screw was loose.  I'll pick up some locktite and take it apart and try again.  :P

DavOh,

Been following the post from time to time, as I don't have a Rossi.  I'd be interested to know how recoil is?  Seems like a light gun for a 308.
Blue locktite is a good idea when starting out everytime, but it seems like it takes the scope shooting loose to figure it out, I know it did me, I've done it before, too :(  Oh well, live and learn.

Good luck with your gun.

Have a 308 Rossi from GM and the recoil is not bad at all. Mine got 1" at 50 and didn't take time to shoot at 100, put 10 rounds in the 10 X ring at fifty with handloads loaded withe varios bullets and powders 200g Speer HP was the best of the jacketed and a 165 LEE design cast with H4831 was the best. Had no leading and the scope was a 3x9x50 BARSKA and I used lock tite so nothing came apart. I might add that a duplex load of a fast rifle powder and a full case of WC872 was just as good.
Not one to give out loads as it might not work the same for you just experment it is fun.

I gotta say, that this gun is in deed a shooter.  I was able to put a sub 1" (@ 100 yds) group together, when I remembered to not grip the stock of the rifle.  With the trigger hand I mean. Any time I hold the grip with my right hand, shots went all over the place. But that was one group out of about 30 shots.  The stock is soo friggin short for me, that I can't shoot for nuttin when I grip the stock regular.

Fits my wife like a glove, Her first group was under 2 inches, again at 100 yds.  Close enough for jazz, and i'm sure it'll get better with practice.

The downside.... RECOIL the thing kicks like a pissed off mule.  My shoulder is sore, just like it was last time. And if I keep letting my wife shoot it as is, she'll start flinching.  Unless I can find a reliable source for the 125 gr. Remington Managed Recoil loads, I may have to trade it in for a .243 for her.

Another semi-downside, is the barrel heats up FAST.  Takes forever for the barrel to cool off and is too hot to touch after shooting 3 shots at 4 minute intervals.

Experimentation to continue.
