IMR4895 for a 1895GS
« on: April 28, 2007, 10:08:01 AM »
Does anyone load this for there 45-70? I am wanting a good load for 300gr hollow points and 405gr soft points. I wuse this with my 30-30 and have good results and would like to use it in my 45-70. I am new to reloading and there is not any where near my house that sells powder so if I could make it simple it would be great.

Thanks Matt

Matt,

I don't have my manuals available at the moment, so I can't suggest a load, but I do use H4895 in my .458 Win.  This powder works very well in a straight walled case, and gives good velocities.

There are enough 45-70 shooters on this forum, so I'm certain that someone will speak up with an appropriate load for you to try.  Good luck with your 45-70, and approach your loads gradually.

Matt

Hodgdon lists a few loads for the 45/70 and IMR4895 . I have not used any of these loads but 4895 is one of my favorate rifle  powders to use overall .

Check the trapdoor and lever gun loads .

stimpylu32: What all do you use H4895 for? Got some and was wanting to use it on something, I know everyone touts 4350 for the 30-06, and I've got some, but I also read were the Gov't orginally used 4895 for the grand old cartridge.

I think I'd try it, I'm using it in my 375 Winchester, and it's giving good accuracy.  I buy it by the keg, and use it in 30-30, 7.7 Jap, .223,  and 35 Remington.  Sounds like a good powder to try!

I use the H4895 for my 223 , 22-250 , 30/30 , 243 and 308 . I like it for the fact that even though it is not the most accurate powder in every load , it is very consistent from lot to lot and handles temp ranges well .

Some powders will give me 1/2" less in my groups in some loads but 4895 is still my go to powder when i start to work up new loads in a new rifle . I also like the fact that i can reduce it by up to 50% for light loads .

I load my Garand with IMR 4895 and also use it for my Ruger #1 in 45-70.  I push a 423 grain bullet around 1870 f/s.  I could go faster but have to ask myself what it would accomplish.  I can get 1.5", 5 shot groups day in/day out with my #1 and am satisfied with it as is.

I load enough IMR-4895 to push the 405 grain Remington bullets out of my Marlin 1895G to 1750 FPS. This load shoots great and is very consistent across the chronograph. Worked extremely well on a big doe this past fall.
