Snares and bait dont work well with each other. Foot traps and bait do.
Snares and Foot traps are tools.Would you use a screw driver to drive a nail ?

What are you trying to snare? I use willow & cottonwood for  under ice beavers. I use moose & caribou winter kills for wolves. I use tainted meat for fox and coyotes. Snares also make the best blind sets IMO.

Big Bait piles DO work. But you don'tt set the snare ON the bait. You set the trails leading to the bait.
I belive you were thinking, Bait as you would bait a dirt hole set.

Big baits and bait stations gets them coming in.I have had unbelievable coyote trails leading to my beaver buial grounds,my buddy thought someone had been trespassing on his property with a 4 wheeler.lol
If you want to use lure and small baits--stick to footholds, or move to Alaska.

Newts right there if you are looking at it as you would a dirt hole, you wouldn't use a snare in that case. Using big baits you are technically setting trail or blind sets. I trap in a heavy snow area where dirt hole sets with foot holds usually aren't practical most of my sets are big bait with snares, since they aren't affected by frequent snow falls.

All that said I do use beaver meat in a cubby with a snare for lynx.

How do you snare rats? I'm been experimenting with different ways but not much luck.

I use either 3/64" 7x7   or 1/32" 1x19  Stainless steel  ,most of my rat snaring is done in brackish water.I cut the cable 14 1/2' long use a BMI mine lock with a swivel.
I find the snare out proforms all other traps when set on dry land trails for Mink and Muskrat. In other sets like bank holes, runs ect., you can use a snare where ever you can use a 110.
The spring is the time to use lure with the rat snares.I have found that the muskrats will make scent posts high on the banks of tide water creeks.I set my snares in the runs/trails leading to these scent posts.
When i cant find one of these scent posts,I will make my own where I want it.(I do the same with beaver castor mounds.) In the skin'n shead I save some muskrat dropings . Out in the marsh I kick in a narrow trail leading from the water,to where it is easy for me to set a snare,on a high bank above the high tide line Place some muskrat dropings at the head of the run. Then use some of my "MUSKRAT LOVE" lure on the dropings .Most of the time muskrats cant pass up this set.
