Handgonne advice please (Well, it's CLOSE to cannon)
« on: May 29, 2007, 11:26:21 AM »
Well I got my .50 handgonne from POWDERKEG (As usual his work is superb) I will brown it as soon as I get some gas (Darn torch won't work without it!)
I have a box of speer .490 balls and patches to match. Any advice at where to start for loads?(I have ffg)
also what about loads for "Salutes" Paper wads?

The .490's are great I would  use an .010 patch loooobed with Moose - Milk and 50 to 60 grains ff. Have you got a slow match and a tiller ., ..,  pics Santa Dave ! This sounds like fun !

I have all the pieces, pics after it gets browned and mounted.
The tiller is a laminated walking stick with a twist (you know, those  Boyd's gun stocks sells)
Was going to finish my linstock today but gotta charge my drill motor first (It's been a long time!)
And you are right IT IS FUN
I think I'll use a punk the first couple times, I can drop that and not damage it.

I load about 32 grains in my .44 Remington percussion revolvers so I would recommend 35 to 40 grains in your gonne as a starting load.  I have loaded as much as 60 grains in my .515" gonne and it gets out to 200 yards with ease.

I shoot .498 patched out of a .520", 9.5" bbl gonne. I started at 40gr and went up to 70. 60gr ffg GOEX seemed to give the best performance out at 75yrds.

Powderkeg can built you what you want. That's who built Santa Dave's hand gonne.
I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

Just remember:

I browned the handgonne, used the oven (she was gone) took twenty minutes! It's very dark!
