RR tie plates
« on: May 09, 2007, 10:42:37 PM »
Just finished painting about 15 rail road tie plates. They seem too heavy to truck into the bush , would be good for beaver. I read some guys use two at a time for coon. I had a hard time taking them out to the road one in each arm. I'd estimate them at 15 to 20 lbs a piece.

Minimum number for beaver, would be 2.And then you would need a soft muddy bottom, for them to do the job.
On a hard bottom,it takes even more weight to hold a beaver to the bottom.
A single plate on a hard bottom would not keep a coon at the end of the drowner.

         Ratboy,

Those old RR plates are 40Lbs each.
When steel was $90. a ton I sold a hundred of them for $1.80 each.
Called it my 'scrapline'. A guy who worked on the RR told me I could pick them up as :
"If we wanted them they wouldn't be there"!
Great Coyote drags too.

take the RR plate and add 4- 6  6-8" carriage bolts. Use the holes provided and use washers. have 1/2 pointing one way, 1/2 the other.

this causes the plate to dig into the bottom, and often one plate will do the job on either beaver or coon.
