like a fart in a submarine.....

long story short, my 83 cylinder is right @  .429;  the bbl is tighter than .4275  .   

i was wondering if some of you fellow owners could tell me how your guns measure up.   this is all in reference to sizing my bullets right.

Size your bullets for the chamber throats, don't worry about the barrel. That barrel size seems a bit tighter than I'd expect from an FA. Their tolerances are super tight in all respects and whatever their spec is I'm betting yours is other than for wear.

I've not bothered to measure mine. Some things I don't waste time on and measuring thoats and bore on a gun that stacks all bullets in a ragged one hole group is one of them. To me it's kinda like patterning my shotgun when I'm smoking most of the targets with dead center hits. What's the purpose?

the reason is that only bullets sized to .429 will chamber in my gun. anything bigger than that wont fit the chamber throat.   i thought that was peculiar.   so i was just wondering.

tighter than 0.4275" ? like maybe 0.357"? Maybe FA put the wrong barrel on your gun!

You think you got problems with throats 0.0015" over bore diameter? You should feel bad for Mike Buchholz (see the thread "used premier grade"). He has a FA that the FA factory confirmed was bad the day it left the factory. They wanted $450 to fix it...

Maybe for a few hundred bucks they will take off your 357 barrel and put on a 44!

Seriously though, I'm just trying to stimulate this forum as are you - its dead as you've noticed. I don't know why your bore is that tight (I've only got a 454 - no help to you). It would be nice if you could get an answer on this forum. I still can't believe Mike had to pay out to fix a factory defect and apparently I'm the only one outraged besides Mike  ::)

thanks.  i aint bitching, i was just wondering;   and i thought it would be appropriate to discuss here.  perhaps i was wrong.   seems like all the interesting and helpful threads are becoming increasingly rare; whereas the "i got my 500 smith" threads thrive.   i was just looking for some input by my fellow f.a. owners.  hopefully i didnt ruin anyone's day.

STJ you have a valid point: one should always search a topic before beginning a new thread as there is always a good chance the collective forum members have "been there, done that". The problem is the GBO search feature flat out stinks. Yes I know GB and Matt have tried but that doesn't change the fact that its' all but impossible to find a subtle topic and a generalized search for "I got my S&W500" results in a thousand hits  ::)

myronman3: I understand that even if a gun shoots, one might want to develop an understanding for why a bore might have a diameter that is comparatively undersized relative to the rest of the industry. If the only replies you receive are telling you to ignore it and just go shoot it, then what is the point of such a forum in the first place?
