There is a good article in the new American Handgunner that says mag springs weakening from staying loaded does not happen and explains in detail the reasons. The article does not mention recoil springs. People replace those from time to time. I never have, wonder if it is necessary. I don't shoot thousands of rounds. Have never had a problem with mag or recoil springs.

Yes, I read that one with great interest. I've wondered about this for a looong time but always felt that an ounce of prevention, etc.

Another great urban legend bites the dust.....

I wonder how many hours I've wasted rotating magazines in the three different semi-autos I keep loaded around the house?

Probably enough time to build a nice duck blind....

I've done the same thing. Have kept rifles and shotguns with the hammers dropped, all springs at rest even though the owner's manual doesn't say you need to.

I haven't read the article, but does it explain how a spring will be shorter after being compressed over a period of time?

Majic,

Urban legend says the spring will be shorter after being compressed for a period of time. Sort of like Memory effect (voltage depression) with Ni-Cd batteries.

The article says this isn't true and it won't be shorter.

Properly designed magazine springs, properly made don't weaken over time. There are exceptions.
