Colt 1917 bull barrel
« on: August 09, 2007, 03:06:44 AM »
I have a Colt 1917 that has been customized with a 6" bull barrel ,vent rib ,adj sights, wide checkered trigger and hammer.
Is this gun worth anything collector wise?
The reason I ask is because I'm thinking of cutting the barrel down to 4" for a carry gun.

Sorry, but your M1917 Colt .45 has lost it's collector value.  It's strictly a shooter now.

Collectors value original finishes and features (uncut barrels, stocks, calibers, sights, etc).

If the finish has not been messed with, installing a good original barrel will restore it's desireability to collectors.

Go ahead and cut that barrel back.  It won't hurt anything.

Unless it was converted by one of the old time specialists with their own collector groups such as Christy Gun Works, Pachmayr, or King's Gunsight Co. and marked as such, its as John Traveler said.

Do you know if any of them used MICRO rear sights?

m-g willy, I have a colt 1917 with a micro sight. mine is a .357 magnum with a 8 3/8" bbl. I have been told that it was an officers model. I don't think there were very many made in .357 but I'm not sure.

Was the micro sight factory or a later add on?

I would have to say that it was added later sometime. It's a good fit but just doesn't look quite right.
I'll try to get a close up pic of it for you.  ;)
