Black Hills .223 ammi
« on: June 04, 2007, 02:59:47 PM »
was at work today and was going to buy some black hills .223 ammo, but when I took it out of the  box I noticed the headstamp was for a NATO round.  what gives?  the box clearly says .223 remington, but the headstamp has the Nato symbol.  is this stuff safe for my Handi?

I think that all Black Hills remanufactured (blue box) is in military brass whether it is Lake City or the WW ones.  It should be SAAMI 223.

I shoot the Black Hills ammo now and it is safe.  The .223 Rem is the civilian version of the Nato round.  Just like the 7.62 Nato and the .308 Win are the same.  What Black Hills and many other ammo companies do is buy government surplus brass, and reload it.  Some of it is new, and I've heard that some is once fired.  Works good anyway.  I've been using it now for several years.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

First Welcome to GBO forums, as far as I know, ( which is not much) Black Hills
is just in to reloading. They get fired brass from ranges, maybe some from Mil.
I am sure it is safe, But I was given some 9mm it was consistent. I have never bought
any Never will. I reload all of mine  just MHO. worth maybe 2 cents. Marv.

I forgot to add that I shoot the Black Hills 55 gr SP to the same POI as the Winchester White Box in my Savage.  It also shot well in the old 1:12 Handi barrel at around 1.75 inches.

Not to pick a fight but 223 and 5.56 are not the same.  5.56 is hotter than 223.  The reverse is true for 308 and the 7.62 NATO.  The 7.62 NATO is MUCH lower pressures.  This is a perennial argument on the internet.
