Encore 12 inch .223 factory ammo
« on: June 02, 2007, 10:18:08 AM »
I have shot this barrel with 55 gr. handloads but today purchased some Black Hills 68 gr. Heavy Match HP ammo.  Expect to shoot it tomorrow and just wondering what any of you who shoot .223 short barrels would predict.

Thanks for your thoughts--I will report back.

Depends on the twist.  The 55 gr black hills shoots about moa out of my super 14.  The 68s might not stabilize well.  Let us know, though.

The box (I just noticed) says "Heavy Match bullets require relatively fast rifling twist rates for best accuracy: A 1 in 10 or faster twist is necessary for 68 and 69 grain bullets."

Just wondering how badly I should expect them to shoot since everything I read says the Encore rate of twist for the .223 is 1 in 12.

My 24" 223 Encore barrel would not do any better than about 5 to 7" groups with the heavy 65, 68, &69gr bullets.  I could get .5 and .75" with 45, 50, & 55gr Bullets .  Now my Rock River with the 1-9" twist loves 60, 65, & 69Gr Bullets . I can get .5" Groups  with the 60V-max @ 125 yards  almost every Time I try.  I say almost every time because I get a flyer every now and then that opens it up to about an 1" .
As Palidin said let us know.
