went to the range today in an abortive attempt to check my BP Rifle Scope (the rifle is a Rossi 50 cal).
From the git-go noticed a
LOT of smoke in the area under the barrel near the receiver face, (it's a "Break-Action type rifle).
After a 3rounds (swabbing between rounds with a dry patch) the gun failed-to-fire. Primer went off, but most of the flash escaped
AROUND the primer.
Examination revealed the "flash-hole was plugged and the primer had backed out about 1/8". (Previous rounds resulted in the expended primer being tight, they required use of my "Primer Popper")
I attempted to remove breech-plug but couldn't with the factory supplied "T-wrench" due to interference with the scope.
(NEXT TIME I'LL HAVE A SOCKET WITH AN EXTENSION)
I'm a longtime BP shooter (40+ years), and due to following the normal cleanliness rules I've never had a Failure-to-fire.
I've noticed when I drop in a primer that the fit is loose, they expand upon firing and have to be "pryed" off. BUT the only tightness seems to be at the "flare" of the primer. The remainder of the primer body is
black with burnt powder residue (I'm using 777).
Anyone have a similar problem? Any ideas anyone?
