Single action help?
« on: June 25, 2007, 12:08:50 PM »
I sold a mini-14 rifle I never used today and was thinking of ordering another single action pistol to replaced it. I Already own a Ruger blackhawk and Ruger bearcat. I was leaning towards a Colt type single action and was looking at the Ruger NEW VAQUERO.I started looking and there is several of these type pistols made another being the Gaucho, the Beretta single action which all look nice. Are any of these any better or all the all pretty close to the same in this price range? I would be buying another 357mag 4.5 to 5.5 inch barrel.

Of the three, I'd focus on the Ruger and the Beretta for their consistant quality.  The Gauchos seem to be quite variable with their quality control.  If you are a handloader, you should order a .44 or .45 on this frame.  Makes the gun a fair amount lighter and more lively.  If you are stuck using store bought shells, I understand the .357.  BOL

Thanks for the info. I do reload and buy ammo both. I have 9 other firearms using 38/357 mag ammo with thousands of Rds of 357mag/38sp ammo and  extras to make many thousand more. Thats mainly why I was looking at 357mag just makes since to be able to interchange ammo gun to gun. Plus I have 187gr cast performance 357 loads at 1275FPS that seem to kill any game walking around these parts or 38sp for pleasant target shooting at the range. I do like the fact the 45colt guns are lighter from bigger holes cut in the steel. I was leaning towards the Ruger and Beretta it just is a hard choice between the two.

Gotta agree with what was said above.  Another choice to consider isif you like the Beretta is to look at the stuff by Uberti.  they're owned by Beretta and are actually the manufacturer of the Beretta replica stuff.  The Beretta models will have a nicer finish to them though but toherwise, same gun.  You're just paying a bit more for the beretta name and the finish.
Personally, I'd go with a Ruger but that's just because I like thier products anyways, especially thier single actions.

dont know much abt the baretta but if it is made by uberti that ruger vaquero will outlast two uberti's
and it being chambered in 357 instead of 45 even the new vaquero will handle hot 357 loads
get one in stainless and it will last forever
i have one of the original vaquero's in 45 stainless with the 4 5/8 tube on it
i have abused this gun for over 10 years with no trouble what so ever
by abused i mean fastdraw, spinning, shooting everything from plastic bullets powered by just the primer to 300gr jhp at 1200 fps
performing aerial spins it has hit the ground hard more than once with no ill effects
i have tried doing these things to other makes of single actions and none of em has held up
you seem to already know the quality of ruger guns stick with it

I can highly recommend the Ruger Anniversary model 357! Mine shot 3/4 inch 25 yard groups out of the box! My brother has a Ruger New Vaquero that is pretty dang accurate as well.....

2 dogs,
My hat's off to you ! You've been able to buy an over the counter 4 5/8" gun that groups into 3/4", but you keep building... and building... and building ! You're a true afficianado ! One can never have quite enough single actions.

That's exactly the reason I bought mine - it's getting a complete facelift and some liposuction.
