Help with Barnes X triple shock
« on: April 22, 2007, 03:04:27 AM »
In my new Rem mod 7 .308 my first handloads with Barnes X triple shock and the added length really compresses the powder when I seat to the necessary 2.80 OAL, especially with the IMR 3031 and 4064.
I have already loaded test loads at 10% below max and 5% below. Now I am worried the the seating depth may create excessive pressures. I would like some feedback before I test them at the range. Any comments.

Have you checked to see how far your bullet is from the lands in your rifle.  I would almost bet that if you haven't, you would find that you could adjust your setting depth so that you are not compressing your powder.  You may also take a look at other powders that may not take as much case room.

v-man,
Go to barnes site and send email with your questions. They have responded within a few hours everytime I contacted them.  They also have a question and answer page.

I suspect that OAL is limited by the magazine box not the throat. I load many calibers in the compressed persuasion, if fact I prefer it. I have found that I generally achieve best performance with the slowest powder that will achieve the desired pressure/velocity. Is your current load within the Barnes Reloading Manual maximum? Also, note that you can use lighter than typical weights when using the X or TSX bullets. I always drop down a notch or two from typical. The 150 gr is plenty and I have used the 130 gr X in the 308 with good success.

The current Barnes #3 doesn't show TSX data, TSX data is available online for some cartridges tho, 308W is one of em.
