XM 257 12 Gauge shot shell
« on: June 02, 2007, 05:38:13 AM »
I was given a 12 ga hull by a friend of mine who says he got it when he was in the Army.  I guess its a pretty straight forward 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch #4 buckshot load..the hull is stamped with the following:  no.4B Special XM 257.  Does anyone know if this is the standard military shotshell round?

It appears you have an experimental military round. Used in VietNam 1967-68. You are correct about the #4 buckshot. The military was doing a comparison with this round, 00 buckshot, and flechette rounds to see which was more effective in combat. From what I read the flechette and 00 buckshot won out.
