I hunt the open end of our lease and as far as I can shoot is 250 yards. Most of the time my shots are less than 75 yards. For one rifle my 7x57 mauser pushing 150-160 grain bullets at 2600 fps works fine, for two rifles my 358 winchester and my 7MM Remington magnum cover everything including when I hunt somewhere else.

This is the current flavor of the day. Model 70 Featherweight, 22" barrel, 1-4x Redfield in 6.5x55. My opinion on this could change tomorrow, or even this evening. But this has been it for a year now!

  Eastern woodlands, including Kentucky...

IMHO...It's pretty hard to beat the Marlin 336 in 30/30...or .35 Rem..

Of course, since the question was...what do you NEED in a deer gun?. If we put the emphasis on NEED, things can change drastically !
My wife's dear, sweet aunt (and her husband) lived on their 1000 acres bordering a state park and very near an Indian reservation all her adult life (now deceased).
She used to hunt for "meat on the table" and harvested many deer and one black bear..

Her weapon of choice (all she had)...was an old H&R single shot 20 gauge w/slugs..

I would suggest looking in the local stores and seeing the price and availability of the ammo  before making a final decision. Unless you hand load .
