475 from 45 70 brass..
« on: July 02, 2008, 03:15:52 PM »
I am about to buy some brass and loaded rounds and some of them are offered and noted to be shortened 45 70 brass and I was wondering if these are OK to use in an FA 475.. .. seems there is something about the rims on the brass but cannot find it.. when I looked at taffin's article on the 475 it was on a ruger conversion and he used the 45 70 brass... I cannot say for sure but seems I made a mental note on the Fa and this brass but I cannot pull it up in a readable format LOL
any help ?

No cut down 45-70 brass will not work in a FA, has to be a oversized cylinder in a Ruger....

Fowler nailed it.

Rims are too big, won't fit FA.

FWIW,

if you or anyone else uses this brass be careful. Its alot thicker and you need to back your loads off substaintialy. My top end 400 loads using 110 needed to be dropped 2 full grains to keep from having stick extraction. On the plus side it lasts about forever.

The 45/70 rim is too large for freedom arms, jack huntington out of lancaster CA. did some early conversions on FA frames before .475 brass was available and had to trim the case rims on 45/70 brass to fit.
