Blueing wear on older gun and what to do?
« on: April 08, 2007, 04:46:13 AM »
Can I touch up or use a cold blueing product to re-blue on areas on an older firearm?  I would like to buy a couple older firearms but the blueing is worn.  What is the best way to fix it or is this a pay for job?

Thanks  Buckfever

Sometimes it is better to leave them as is but if you must I will tell you what I do and it works very well...
Clean whatever part it is thoroughly with alcohol and let it dry.Do not touch any surface and be sure there is absolutely no oil on the metal to be blued.
I use 44/40 paste as you wipe it on and wipe it off and it leaves a durable dark finish, though it is more likely to be black than blue.It cleans up the looks of an old gun very well and is easy to use...

Do you use it on all of the barrel or just the worn area?    Thanks   buckfever

It depends on what your goal is...If you want spot treatments, that will work or if you want to go all the way with it you can do that as well...I have even used it to do new, in the white barrels...

I like the OxphoBlue from Brownells the best. It's nearly as tough as a salt blue.. It's easier top use than any other cold blue. No cleaning as the stuff will blue right thru light oil and finger prints. It usually requires several applications and burnishings(follow the included directions) before is begins to look right.. I have alos found the liquid easier to get an even color..

Never had a good result with cold bluing, here is a link with a home brew that really works.
http://www.geocities.com/kemays/formula.htm  Just make sure their is no alum. copper, or brass going into the solution.  DEGREASE completely and watch the temp its important I use a meat thermometer.
The results are very good.

  I like you set-up.
I think I'll give it a try. Got a question before I do it though. I have an older sixgun that spent alot of time in the holster and the bluing is shot on the wear/contact points but not all over. Must I strip down the existing bluing before re-bluing. I assume I must, how is this done?
