Model 81??
« on: April 29, 2007, 05:13:33 AM »
I'm thinking bout the next one and have been looking at the Model 81.  Possible .35 or .300 sav.  Anybody have any experience with one??  What to look for??  Strength and weaknesses??  This one was discontinued in 1950 and I'm looking for a shooter..........

I have a 1941-vintage .35 that's in 95%+- condition that I'm fond of. They are big and heavy (real walnut and steel do that...not much of that anymore) so there's a plus and a minus there, depending on your point of view. If you like the look of the Browning A5 shotgun, you'll like the 81 Woodsmaster. The fit and finish are indicators of the way things were done 60+ years ago. Not a rifle to take apart and tinker with without instructions. One of John Browning's designs, so functioning is flawless...mild recoil. Good "woods" accuracy.
They have never been hot with the collectors so prices are mild by today's standards, although I do see some upward movement. There's usually a few on Gunbroker.com.
I think you'd enjoy having one...if only to turn the clock back a bit.

There was an article in a magazine (RIFLE?) a few months back on the Remington 8.
Both the 8 and 81 are "takedown" guns, you remove the forend and there is a screw that you remove with the attached lever, no tools needed.
I bought my 81 in 300 Savage with the idea of recreating an old time hunting camp with some hunting buddies, basically trying to keep everything pre war like wearing plaid wool and shooting old guns and taking black and white pics of the whole deal... that is yet to happen.
