H4198 & 45-70

Any one have a load worked up using H4198 and a 525gr lead RN. Have seen a load in Speer book,but they listed IMR4198 for 500gr lead.I have 2lbs of H4198 to use up before I can get another type of powder,It was a deal at $10.00lb.  Just need Cowboy load,thanks

Never have used smokeless in a .45-70.  Takes most of the fun out of it.

The loading manuals I have do not even list the 525gr bullets.  I have only used 4 powders with the 45/70 4198 was not one of them.  YOur not being ignored, I just have no idea.

Like BF I've been looking for something for you. Biggest bullet I found is 485gr w/28-32gr of H4198. It's listed in Hodgdons Cowboy load manual. I was to the point of giving no information rather than incomplete info.

Looked in the hodgdon book latest edition and there are no loads for 525
That is an awful lot of bullet for a 45-70 those heavy bullets were made for 45-110.45-120 or vise versa the heaviest bullet listed for 45-70 and 4198 is a 485 grain lead flat point, on 28 grains of powder 4198 starting load.
This is listed in the trapdoor section of the book.
You might try e-mailing a request for a formulation to Hodgdon they will most likely send you something safely usable. though you will likely be a skosh under 1000 fps with that big ole buulet.
