6.5-284 loads
« on: June 28, 2007, 12:09:26 PM »
I just took possession of my new 6.5-284. While going threw the break in, I noticed that some of the cases had a shiny mark on the head, and every once in a while a case would show a blackened neck. I was using win formed 284 to 6.5 cases, all were trimmed to 2.1655" and shooting .015 off the lands. The bullet was a Hornady 129 sp, using 44g of IMR 4831. What are these indicators of?

With out seeing the cases , i'd would have to say these signs are from the cases not fitting the chamber properly . what i mean is that the chamber is larger than the die sized case . was this the first firing of these formed cases ?

If this is the case try just neck sizing the brass now that they have been fire formed to the chamber , that should cure the problem of the cases sliding back and putting marks on the head , as for the black neck it could be a case of the neck not expanding to fill the chamber due to a low pressure .

Just a couple of ideas to throw at you . i have a 30/30 that no mater what i do i still get some black on the neck even at MAX load , i will have to do a chamber cast to see if the neck is just to large but it still shoots very well . may just have to live with the black .  ???

This is the first firing, I necked down new win 284 brass to 6.5, and used a mid range load of h4831 my using imr 4831. I will give it a go for accuracy using Lapua cases with 142 Sierras match bullets. I plan on trying IMR 4831, IMR 4350, and RL22 for powders trying for 2900-3000 fps and accuracy.
