"Basement Plinking Loads" for a 475 Linebaugh.......
« on: May 26, 2007, 12:09:41 PM »
Okay, without getting into the why, has anyone developed an extremely light light load for the 475?  If so what projectile did you use?  What powder, and just how light and quiet were you able to get.  I am looking to get to a quiet "backyard" load to plink and practice with?  Any creative loaders out there?

I have just started loading for my 475. I have been loading a 400 Gr Speer with 11.3 gr of Unique. This gets the recoil down to about like a heavy loaded 44 mag. There are probably better powders but that is just what I had on hand.

I use 8.0 of WW231 with a 400 grain cast bullet.  Velocities are around 825 fps and kicks more like a .44 Special.

My favorite light load in 475 is 9.1gr Titegroup w/ a 400gr Cast bullet.  Gives one-hole accuracy at 25yds and is very managable.  I would hesitate to shoot any of the listed loads in my basement though.  For that, I drilled out the primer hole on some 480 cases I had lying around and melted a layer of parafin in a cookie sheet.  Pressing the primed cases into the wax yielded some fun wax-bullet loads that shot pretty well at 10yds.

If it's really for the basement, I wish you'd reconsider unless you have a good ventilation system overhead that pulls the vapor and smoke right out of the house immediately. Then there's the problem of lead contamination from particulate matter from the primers. It's really not safe.

If it's for the backyard, heck, there are lots of options. I'm sure there's lots of good advice here on that.

Guys, he's got "backyard" in the original post.  Hopefully he's not gonna shoot in the house, 'cause even with the load I posted; he's gonna get some good penetration.  It's not easy to stop that heavy a bullet once you get it going.

Okay, bad choice of words when I said basement.  As it says and like MS Hitman noted, I am looking for plinking in the back yard.  The question was put out there looking for the quietest load I could get for practice with my 475.  I was hoping for something that will not upset the neighbors too much.  Even though they are about a 1/4 mile away, even launching 400 grains of lead at a "mild" 900 fps makes a bit of noise.  I was looking for any info on load development using a couple of grains of maybe Bullseye or maybe 2 or 3 grains of Trail boss and maybe a 320 grain cast lead bullet.  Any thoughts or experience?

You're stepping off into territory best left alone in my opinion.  If you need to download your .475 to such low levels, you'd be better off just practicing with a .22.
