Any Bullseye shooters out there ?
« on: September 10, 2005, 09:56:30 AM »
I love to shoot Bullseye. But I have to admit,I'm not all that great at it with what I own. I've posted real good scores though, with accurate revolvers & pistols. So.....I got a Ruger bull barrel target gun,6 7/8" with a Clark trigger & a Colt Anaconda in 44. The Ruger is a Mark II in 22.
Now I'm building a 45 ACP. I got a new/old stock national match slide with match barrel & bushing. I've bought my trigger group from Wilson & also have a firing pin & other small pieces. I intend to get a Essex frame & Bomar sights next.
I know that there are lots of folks that go & buy the super-duper Widget from whoever but that costs more than I can afford. And besides that,I like doing things myself. I have friends who have built winning comp guns & they will help me over the rough spots if needed.
Do any of yall have on-going projects that you want to tell about ??
I also have a Mauser project going but I'll save that till another day.

Sounds like fun, although I am afraid that the deepest I am into anything is just reloading and shooting rifles.  Since I can only shoot on weekends my load testing etc... is a very slow process.

Hi Jose

I love to shoot bullseye but have very little time or opportunity to do it!

First, I'm all wrapped up in Highpower already and second, there aren't five Bullseye matches each year in all of Montana, including the state match and a regional!

When I lived in the mid-Atlantic area 15 years ago, I had one of the 2112's at Quantico build me a ballgun. I'm sure it hasn't seen 10 matches yet! I shoot it for the Centerfire & 45 stages and Leg matches. The 22 is handled clumsily by a stock Ruger 22/45. Ugh.

Pistol is mostly an indoor wintertime thing for me. Wish it weren't so!

Are There Any Bullseye Shooters Out There?

I shoot high  power competition, but not as often as I care to compete, during the 99 days of summer.  During the winter, I shoot a 22 caliber-only pistol league for 16 weeks.  It gives me more focused trigger time and a great way to meet other competitors at different ranges in the area.  Give a Winter League a try. :D

Howdy Fireball.
Lone Yankee & I have tried to stir up interest in a 22 pistol league. There is not a lot of adult interest. But I do have 22 pistol shooters that I train in 4-H at our club. I've been training kids in rifle & pistol over 10 years & love doing that.
But anyhow,Lone & I go out to the range & shoot 22 or muzzleloaders or whatever by our lonesome if necessary. We just love to shoot.

I love Bullseye.  I shoot Expert, pushing Master scores.  I am Distinguished in Service pistol.

Bullseye is one of the easiest to equip yourself for, and easy to shoot into the 80% range.  A bit harder to average high 80's.  Then it gets harder.  Actually one handed pistol shooting is probably the most challenging of the shooting disciplines to get into the 90% scores.  High 90's takes extreme devotion.  Great fun.

I too have been shooting in "BULLSEYE" compatition for 17 years this year. I have a EXPERT rating, my averages are in the low to mid 280's. Outdoors I am higher, (As are most) with a low 870's average. (These are 900 matches of course.)

I LOVE the sport, I got my wife involved!! She has averaged Expert but for the past couple years its been just below in Sharpshooter. But she almost always gets first or second place Sharpshooter in our leage banquet.

 Great sport, excellent people!!

Took up bullseye shooting as a hobby and ended up working at an Indoor Shooting range. Within 3 months I started to compete and at the end of my first year I won a State bullseye championship. From that point on it was more than a hobby it was my life. Took 3 more titles then retired at a Master rating. You will meet the greatest bunch of guys on the shooting range. Now I just shoot once a month to keep the ole eyes in tune.

If you ever decide to shoot 2700 matches decide up front that you will only compete against yourself and it becomes more fun. I have seen too many others get frustrated when they could not beat someone at a match. This is supposed to be fun and relaxing. Of course winning makes it even more fun.

Now I am training my niece (she is 22 years old) using my old pistols and she is kicking some butt. Must be in the genes in our family.

I shot Bullseye competition from 1990 to 2000. Master division. Maybe try it again. Decided to try long range cowboy rifle competition in 2007. Marlin 1895 in 45/70 in a timed fire at 100 and 200 and 300 yards at steel plates. Something different.

I shoot Bullseye at our local club.  All indoors.

This winter I will be hitting it hard as I plan to go to Camp Perry next year.

I shoot a S&W M41, S&W M52, and a Clark heavy slide 70 series.

This is a great shooting disipline and has helped me do well in PPC.

I'm hoping to get started in Bullseye.

Not trying to hijack this thread but would like to ask you experienced shooters if I am being foolish for thinking of using revolvers in this sport? I'm 64 and know I'm not going to be challenging for state or national honors but would hope to show slow, steady improvement. I realize the overwhelming majority of shooters use semi-autos but I really like revolvers (thinking S&W). Is this too much of a self imposed handicap?

Appreciate your comments.

I shot bullseye for ten years and believe a semi auto is a must. The timed fire and rapid fire events require a reload of 5 rounds. If you are talking rimfire, moon clips are not available as far as i know. In rapid fire pulling a double action trigger would put you at a huge disadvantage. You can pick up a new semi 22 for under 300 bucks. Get the semi and you will enjoy the sport many fold over a revolver. Good luck and have FUN.

Ned,

Back in the day Bullseye was a revolver game.  Smith and Wesson was a common gun used, use a K-22 (M17 or M617) or a K-38 (M14).

While you must reload, it is not while being timed.  Standard speed loaders will work fine.

At our club some of the guys shoot two handed.  These are the older guys that have developed poorer eyesight or the shakes, as well as some of the new shooters.  Once these shooters start to get decent scores they change over to one handed shooting.  My point is most shooting clubs will be tolerent of a new shooter.

As well I have shot with revolvers and find no serious disadvantage.  It is more challanging.  When I am shooting PPC during the winter I sometime shoot my PPC revolver (S&W, M686) double acton, during a bullseye match.

Much is available on the internet, and stop by your local club to watch.  Most places will be friendly.

Enjoy,

Fred

Don't want to "hijack" this thread but was wondering if any of you Bullseye shooters use (or see others use) revolvers in this competition?

I'm hoping to get started in Bullseye (at age 64) and while I realize the vast majority of shooters use semi-autos I really prefer revolvers. Since I have no illusions of competing for state or national championships I'm wondering if I'm handicapping myself too much were I to compete with revolvers (thinking S&W 617 and 625).

Thanks.

I apologize for what was essentially a "double post"; when I tried to post the first entry I got a "website not responding" prompt so did not think my post had been received; it was not until I posted the second that I saw that the first had actually gone through.

Again, my apologies.

I have to agree with Happy Hunter. Although I no longer participate in Bullseye, I used the K22 and K38 for more than 20 yrs. Other than putting up with good natured ribbing I found it a gratifying challenge  to score above the autos. ;)

Since you are shooting for your own enjoyment and against yourself, go ahead and use your revolvers.  The rapid stage will be a challenge but there was a revolver shooter at the National Matches in the recent past who shot in the 2600's.  It's not impossible, just more difficult.
