Conical slipage
« on: January 18, 2007, 08:26:19 AM »

Just wanted to know if you guys have had any conical slipage during hunting. I know that plastic sabots, or cloth from a patch would make it harder for the bullet to slip a few inches if it were bumped while huntin. i am going to buy some buffalo bullets and just wodered if i would need to check the bullet placement (to see if its still on the powder) a few times during the day...............or am i just being worrysome.

Thanks

What brand rifle are you shooting?

Seems to me buffalo bullets are .506 or larger. I know in my White .504 bore they were tuff to load.

You won't know for sure until you load them in your rifle.  If they load tight they should be OK, but a loose fit you might need to either foul the barrel first or put some paper or patch around the conical to tighten up the fit.

I'm gonna try some yellow gasline tape on my White conicals to see if I can get away from that fouling shot.

Toytruck,

I use 2 wraps of the thin white Teflon tape on the NoExcuses conicals in my Whites. Does a good job as a gas check, holds the bullet in place, as a all weather seal, and gives me better accuracy including first shot same poi.

Thanks Surveyor!!  I have the yellow tape on hand so will try that first, if that doesn't work will get some of the white tape.

The tape is over the bullet lube! I use it as teflon patching. Works great!

I like the tape idea. I shoot 320 grn conicals made from my Lee R-E-A-L   M-L bullet mold. They shoot very well & usually go through a deer. I have read some data on conicals slipping off the powder charge. I usually keep and eye on it & check once in a while when the time is right. I have a Knight Disc, 2 actually.
