Model 700 ADL/BDL Magazine Difference?
« on: April 06, 2007, 05:40:57 AM »
I posted below about buying a new stock for my Model 700 Mountain Rifle and this new stock has a blind magazine.  While looking on-line for a trigger guard, I noticed that the BDL and the ADL have different part numbers for the magazine.  I had assumed they were the same, but have never had a chance to look up close at an ADL magazine, so now I am wondering.  Do I need to order a new magazine, as well as the trigger guard for my rifle?

The ADL is a blind magazine internal of the stock. Meaning that you have to cycle all shells to get them out. The BDL has a hinged floorplate so that you can let the shells out all over the seat of your truck at once without cycling the bolt. The DM means that there is a detatchable magazine. There are kits sold that change a BDL to a DM. Cabellas sells them. Hope this helps.

Brian,

The ADL and BDL magazines have different magazines - One is thicker(action to bottom).

I changed one out from ADL to BDL and was lucky that the one I bought from and individual on one of the forums included all parts, including the trigger guard, follower, magazine and spring.

It's been over thirty years, since I converted a 700ADL I had to the BDL mag config - but IIRC, I just ordered the correct length BDL bottom metal assembly (trigger guard, floorplate, latch) from Remington.

I then cutout the wood of the blind mag part of the stock, and inletted for the new bottom metal, and used the old sheet metal magazine box, follower, and spring.

I put an SPS BDL barrelled action into a wooden ADL style stock, a Classic if I remember right.  The BDL magazine box was a few millimeters too high (thick, whatever).  It made a pressure point inside the stock when the action was bolted down.  You should wait to see if you actually need a new magazine box.  The difference was minimal.  Try the old one first, they are essentially identical. Worst case scenario, you relieve the bottom plastic or wood to use your old box.
