I'd say gather around you some load manuals, & an array of components & experiment to see what works in your gun. Each is an individual. What might shoot real good in Barney's, might not hit the side of a barn, pun intended, in yours. Just my 2 cents, jd45

24.0 grains of W296 or H110. I use it in all brands of cases (EXCEPT S&W which blew up a TC barrel for me) this is the standard max load in most manuals and it has proven accurate in EVERY .44 magnum gun and barrel I've ever shot it in. Magnum primers are generally recommended for all ball powders. I use either WW or CCI.

As to cases I've used WW, RP, FC, Hornady and a pile of others but these days sorta like the Star Line best. They all work just fine. BUT if you ever see one with with a S&W headstamp mash it with a hammer and toss it.

Yup! GB's suggested load works for me too!
I shoot the same load GB does when I shoot jacketed bullets in my 44 Mag Ruger Super Black Hawk or my Ruger 77/44.

My Winchester booklet lists 24.0 grains as the only load using WW296 with jacketed bullets.

There is a note at the bottom of the page that says "Do not reduce powder charges with 296 powder".

You've got me interested in H110.  Does 24 grains of H110 fill most of the case?  Is it still possible to double charge a 44 mag case using this powder?

Absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to double charge with H110/W296. With most bullets properly seated the charge will be lightly compressed.

hoggunner,

If the muzzle flash of H110 bothers you, try 21 or 22 grains of Alliant 2400 with a mag primer.

Shoots superbly out of my Redhawk!

Does the Winchester WLP work as well as a mag primer?  I know they say that it can be used for either.

Thanks,
