Yard Sale AMMO!
« on: June 09, 2007, 08:50:13 AM »
To cut the story to the bone:  400-500 golf balls for $8.00 at a yard sale today!

Now I've got to dig out that Napoleon with the 1-7/8 bore and sleeve it to 1.70" .

Where was the source for SEAMLESS DOM ?

1  7/8ths= 1.875 - 1.700 = .175 divided by 2 =  .0875
That is some almighty thin walled tubing.
Or am I looking at this wrong?
I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

Your MATH is correct.

But since the bore is now 1-7/8 there is .0875" windage on EACH side.

Therefore, I'll bore and ream the tube, then sleeve it, so it'll be the right caliber.

Hey Tim,  You can get 4130 from Dillsburg Aeroplane Works in PA.  They stock 2-1/4" OD .250 wall at 14.90 per foot plus shipping [last I checked].  Also, they may have 2" .120 wall in stock.  Their phone number is 717-432-4589.  It's best to call near the end of the day before 5 pm.  If you call earlier in the day you may get a busy signal. They sometimes leave the phone off the hook to get their orders processed.   Dom

Thanks, Dominick !

4130 is good stuff and for this use .250 wall thickness  is good.

Rickk - Patching is ok, but it gets old.  Actually, the Napoleon is cast iron and there's a little porosity, so even though it's been proven by shooting many golf balls and (by a previous owner) cast lead balls, I haven't done much with it for concerns of safety.

You know you're a cannon-addict when you refer to golfballs as *ammo*...and all your friends know what you're talking about!

And when friends at work unannounced will hand you a bag of hacked up golf balls knowing you will shoot them too!

I also just picked up some "Yard Sale" ammo today. Not bad for 23 cents each. I Just can't seem to find them in bulk. :'( So, a few at a time will work. Now, I just need to get of my lazy arse and get a bed made for my SBR coehorn..... :D  :D

P.S.- They are 2.24" in diameter.

Be careful when shooting those billiard balls they will bounce.  Another place to look for them is at a Vending Machine companies.

Is not the que ball slightly different in size or weight?  (Since it on some billiard tables will be returned differently to the rack at the end when you scratch.)

Reminds me of a set (at Fort Devens, MA) that was loaded into a blank-firing salute cannon (105mm pack howitzer) by a certain Intel Officer class (long before I was there enlisted).  Took out a number of windows of parked cars across on the other side of the parade field - for which a certain Officer Class took up a collection.
