Ultra varmint 223
« on: May 28, 2007, 06:05:20 AM »
I purchased a H&R Ultra Varmint Fluted with The Choate stocks in 223.  Are any of you shooting one of these and what are you feeding it. I put a Millet 4-16 Tactical on it with high Leupold QRP rings. This is going to be my truck gun, it will be hunted a lot for deer, coyote and wild dogs.  As soon as I see that it is a keeper I will Duracoat it to keep down maintenance. :) I am trying to make this rifle as rugged as posible because all of the abuse it will receive.

I dont usually ask opinions but you fellows on here Know a lot on the Handi rifle.

Thanks
BigT ;D

Weather you got the 1 in 9 or the 1 in 12 twist barrel , you will find that the 55 grain bullets are about the heaviest that will shoot well , some have got the 60s - 65s to shoot but those are few and far between .

The biggest thing is to stay away from the Mil. surplus ammo , one it shoots like crap and two it will have case sticking problems ( bad ) if you hand load you should have no problem gitting 1/2" groups @ 100 yards .

So shoot and enjoy  ;D

I tells how in the FAQ section of the stickies. But basically you put a tight fitting patch on a cleaning rod and mark the rod at the breech. Make a second mark 12" away and push the rod into the barrel and count the revolutions until it has traveled the 12". Like Stimpy said the reports are nothing over 55 grains for either twist. Mine is an ultra with 1-12 twist.

I have some match kings 69grain that shoot very well out of my 1-9 twist 223 but pretty much just load the 55grainers to also use in other guns. Kurt

Impossibleshot,

Mine shoots verrrry well.  I use a handload that I originally came up with for my Remington 700.  Tried that one in the .223 Ultra that my wife got me for Christmas and sold the Remington!  Not sure what the charge weight is at the moment I would have to look, but the brass is Lake City, the primers are Remington Small Rifle, the Powder is Varget and the bullet is a 50gr. V-Max.  Use the very same load except seat a Sierra 40gr. HP and get just about the same accuracy which is just at a tiny bit over 1/2" at 100yrds. if I do my part at the bench.  I know that the rifle is capable of it but I am usually not. :-\

Here is a post I did a little while back with a 75gr bullet.
No tricks just loaded them up and started shooting.

If you're inquiring about the twist rate, the answer is no they don't know, the ONLY way to know is check it, that info is in the FAQs under the twist rates.

Knowing is kind of a moot point, in general, the 1:9" doesn't shoot any of the longer bullets any better than the 1:12", so pick a bullet 40gr-55gr and shoot it, try some in the 60gr to 64gr and you might be happy, try 68gr-70gr and you'll most likely be disappointed. ;)
