I don't have the .40 but I got a 9mm compact for my wife and it's been a very satisfactory gun.  I think it has the mildest recoil of any 9mm of its size.  Of course, the .40 would have more, but that's apples and oranges.  It's a very easy gun to operate and maintain.  It carries well, and completely disappears in a Don Hume Tuck-This IWB holster.

YMMV,

Love it.  Put my hands on one and instantly knew that this is the gun for me.  Got one for the wife as well and she loves it.  Make sure that you get the version without the magazine disconnect.  There is a dearth of accessories right now but I think that will change as this pistol enjoys increasing ownership.  Magazines are a bit pricey.

The gun itself is very accurate and has very little recoil.  My wife was leery of shooting a .40 but was very pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the M&P is to shoot.  I can highly recommend.
