Receiver Question
« on: July 12, 2007, 03:22:09 PM »
Guys,

I just bought an SB2 30-06 sight unseen (not from here). Once I got it i was surprised by what I got. It appears that someone has welded on the inside of the receiver and then ground it down. I am not sure for what reason. There are no cracks or anything that looks like a repair. I can not for the life of me figure this out. Now I wonder what affect it has had on the receiver do I use it?

Judge for yourself. I will let my gunsmith look at it as well.

I would like a better look at the pictures. I you were to put in half as many pictures and some how make them bigger I am sure someone here could give you some input. You have many pictures but I can't make it out due to the size of them.  Dale

From the looks of it....it appears to have been over heated on the side of the frame...which is the cherry spot I am guessing about...Hopefully this is just a flash reflection..but even on the all the rest at different angles they are in the same place...In all honesty...I wouldn't use it..and I would try to get my money back on it...since it should be considered as heavily modified and damaged...

yes those areas are where it was welded on the inside. I think the money back option is not there. I am stuck with it. I will probably part it out and try to get some of my money back.

Look in FAQ, you might find your answer--they did it another way.

They probably welded a little metal in it to bed the barrel to the frame.  I think it would scare me a little, but it may make a good frame for one of the 22RF barrels or a shotgun.  Larry

It doesn't look like JB weld or Devcon to me from what I can see...I may be wrong on it.....but I don't think I would use the durn thing for any barrel...without at least having it checked out by a competent gunsmith...If those are "cherry spots" on the receiver then the heat treating has been compromised and the structural integrity of the receiver is in question.....If you paid by credit card...or check..you can stop the payment on it...especially if you  hadn't been told this was done on it...I sure wouldn't accept it as it is...I don't know where you bought it..but most places will refund your money if not happy with it...that is unless you bought it "as is"...Call who ever you got it from...and ask for a refund...There is just too many good Handi's out there you can buy..

I would beat up the seller some way, they slipped one by you with that one.  I would say a RF barrel would be fine, one of the low presure rounds would probably be good but I would run from a .243 on it. Larry

Unless you have some recourse with the seller, you are stuck with it. The action is in my opinion unsafe and should be scrapped.

To convert the action to a 22 rimfire would cost more than what the action is worth. Not a good option.

If you resold it you assume a liability. So take your lumps strip out any usable parts and give it the sledge hammer treatment.

I too hate to 'waste' anything and would initially be looking around for some way to get some use out of the thing if it were mine (as trotterlg suggests) but I think I'd ultimately vote with Fred on this one. And it's nice to have some spare parts on hand anyway.

I recently bought a crappy scope on-line and bumbled around trying to figure out a use for it... finally realized it was too much hassle to save it and now I just use it for decoration!

Maybe I'll knock the lenses out and figure out a way to mount it on a marshmallow gun!  ::)

I took it to my gunsmith today and he said that he would not be afraid to shoot it at all. He said that the overheated area was so small and in an area that is insignificant to the pressure of the caliber. Still skeptical I will get a second and maybe a 3rd or 4Th opinion before and IF I shoot it.

It looks like a really lame attempt to fit up a barrel that was a sloppy fit on the receiver.  Does the serial number on the barrel match the number on the receiver?  I wonder what the factory would do with that frame?  I'd either use it for parts and accept it as a lesson learned, or fit it with a shotgun barrel.
