Well, I'll admit it I made a hasty and spontaneous buy. I was in my local shop searching for a Big Bore revolver and just generally slinging lots of BS, when I saw a couple of "new" items in the used section. The first was a Ruger Speed Six Stainless in 38SPL. Its tight and in very good shape except for some of what looks like wear from a poor fitting holster. Im guessing it was bought by a Security Officer of Off Duty Police and then stuck in the cheapest holster he could find. If thats the case it was carried alot and shot very little, and thats just the way it looks and feels. Its got the fixed sights that I like for this kind of social work gun and the price was reasonable at under $300.
The second was spotted the very next day after Id already put a deposit on the Ruger. Its a 686 snubby that has been magna ported. I wouldnt know how to tell if it was S&W factory or done later by the owner but it does have the "trapazoidal" (?) shape that I seem to remember as Maganaport(?). The grips look like Herretts on the Jordan style so I not sure if they are factory of not. The price was a bit more but not tooooo much (yes Dear...), so of course I had to put down a deposit on that as well.
Im having the shop ask their "visiting" gunsmith (he picks up items then retuns them when hes finished) if the Ruger can be opened up to 357. It looks easy enough to me and I know the gun is strong enough for it. As I recall a lot of Police Departments wanted 38 SPL only so a 357 round didnt accidently slip into the chamber and offend a citizen making poor decisions....
So, they arent BIG BORES and they arent exactly pocket lites but they mine, or will be soon. The dealer says the Ruger Speed Six was one of Rugers best and it sure is well built.
Whatdya think?
