Tasty Bear!!
« on: June 25, 2007, 05:41:25 AM »
I needed to thin out my large freezer a bit, too much bear!  I decided to make a huge dutch oven full of stew.  Not to give away all of my recipe, but I started by cubing and browning many pounds in butter, olive oil, flour, salt, pepper, oregano, marjoram, thyme, rosemary, and sweet basil.  Many fresh vegetables, beef stock, and hours later..... I have an enormous volume of delicious stew!

later,

I always have the problem with salmon.... which is where the chowder comes in...  Nothing like a stew or chowder to solve an overful freezer problem!

Not to get into any religious debates of what to eat or not; I know several who feel it's not right to hunt and kill any predator big game animals for food (lions, tigers, bears, etc.). I for one cannot get myself to hunt and kill any big game animal unless it is to be used. An exception would be to remove a problem animal, but even then I'd not want to waste the meat if it is a game animal.

I enjoy eating bear meat just as I enjoy eating beef. If I didn't, I doubt I'd ever hunt one.

Yeah, I'm am not a trophy hunter either.  Bear is a very good tasting meat, it is always good to be able to look in the freezer and see "bear" on a package, and a good reason to hunt them.

Just to put this in perspective - I live in South Africa.  The changes of me ever getting
the change to hunt bear is maybe 1 %. Same % for lion - I just can't afford something
like this.
I just never thought of eating bear until I saw this post.
