180 gr. 35 caliber single shot pistol bullet in Whelen

I believe this bullet is discontinued, Hornady made it but as is my usual practice to buy any bullets I can find cheap in 35 caliber I found four boxes for $12. each and they are mine. They have a nice point and were made mostly for contender pistols in 35 Remington. I loaded 10 of them on top of 46.0 grains of IMR 4198 and shot a couple into dirt. They maintained a one chunk appearance. MY guess is I am getting 2600 fps. Anyone have any on game experience with this bullet on Whitetails?

The 180gr SSP is still available, I think you'd be exceeding its terminal performance boundary starting out at 2600fps on any close range impact. You can see its performance at 35 Rem velocity in the MO link below.

Thanks for the links. I figure it will work on the rampaging raccoon population and maybe a long shot but mostly i will use it to fireform brass and playing. I ought to go to the range today and see where this bullet hits in comparison to my standard load with the 250 grain Speer.

The last coyote I shot was with my Whelen shooting the 250 grain Speers. I haven't shot any game with it yet so varmint rifle it is. I am tempted to shoot a deer with it but I really put it together for a nightstalking hog gun. Here in Texas hogs are varmints too but you can eat some of them. My 358 is a really shiny older model BLR which makes it unsuitable for night hunting as the glare causes problems in the scope and I cant bring myself to paint it barbecue black just yet.

I've got an M81 BLR 308, I took some of the shine off the stock with #0000 steel wool, it's killed a bunch of elk, deer and several coyotes too, but never hunted at night, dunno if anything is even legal here at night, maybe coyotes.

The glare is from the nicely blued barrel. You lay the forearm of the stock on your forearm and have the spotlight on the right side of the barrel and point it at the hog. The glare off the barrel is enough to make it tough to see thru the scope. Best is a painted rifle in flat camou or gray colors with no front sight. My 7x57 and 35 Whelen are both "painted rifles" put together on mauser rifles, they make perfect night stalking implements. I have to say that I am geting to like the BLR and I just may paint it a combination of flat black and gray. Unless reason breaks in and I sell it first.

How about some removable camo tape?

Might do that or just use the Whelen and use the BLR for daytime stand hunting. Loaded up 22 rounds with the SSPB in brass made from new 30-06 cases for fireforming duties. I could get away with just taping the barrel on the BLR in front of the forearm. It wouldn't hurt to paint the front sight flat black either.

Well 46.0 grains of IMR 4198 under the SSPB is a little hard on the shoulder for fireforming. I don't know how fast it was going but 22 rounds in a row wasn't pleasant at all. I had two different brands of brass and they printed a bit apart though all 22 went into 3 inches even though I was not concentrating much.
