870 Remington Express 20 ga. Fully Rifled
« on: July 01, 2007, 02:03:23 PM »
Hello there,

I was looking into buying one of these, for this years deer season, and  coyotes.  Does anyone have one? and how does it shoot @ 100 yds.  The reason I am asking is, I have the same gun , but in 12 ga.  I would like to try a  20 ga, better on the recoil, and also to pass the 20 ga on to my son in a couple of years when he is old enough to hunt .  I am currently shooting Barnes Expanders in the 12 ga. open sights.  I prefer to shoot open sights, I do have the b-square mount handy with 2-7X scope, but prefer open sights.  I will shoot open sights with the 20 ga if I choose that one too.  What are your experiences with this gun?

Thanks in advance,

Jellyhead

Hey jellyhead! hows it going? Your going to love it!! I just bought mine last week. Its a rem 20 gage fully rifle barrel youth model, and mine LOVE the Cheap slugs! Still in the process of still testing ammo/slugs if you decide to buy one start with the cheap slugs first. I'm getting 3" or better in some cases one raged hole with iron sights at 100 yards, but I think it was pure LUCK!! Good luck!!

Doe,
how many times have you taken the 870 to the range and achieved 3 inch groups?

I've taken my Remy to the range 3 time to the range so far,  if that help any. O-ya if your going to shot the cheap lead slug they're going to lead, but it not going to hurt the barrel, just lots of elbow grease to clean after. So did U get the new toy yet? if you did tell how it went?

Doe,

Thanks for the replies, I am still debating with myself over this gun.  What "cheap slugs" are you  trying?  How does the youth model feel with a 1" shorter Length of Pull?  I have seen the youth model in a few sporting good stores around me, maybe I should pick one up and get the feel.

The cheap slugs i use are the Remington or Winchester Slugs that come 15 to a box.  Walmart typically carries them for about $6 per box.

the gun feels like a lever action, really fast on the aim even with factory irons. Next year I'm going to put an XS trillium ghost sight on it they are go for about $150.00 ,  And the cheap ammo so far that (my) gun like is the hasting slug and the Fed-trueball 2 3/4  3/4oz. I've have not tried the expensive slug yet though.

What kind of groups are you getting with rifled slugs out of that rifled barrel
at 100 yds?  I have never tried the rifled slugs out of my rifled barrel, just sabots.

I was shooting my daughter's 870 20 ga, Rifled barrel open sights and I could not believe how accurate I could be with it.  I am 6'3" tall, and it gives me a great sight picture even with the smooth bore barrel.  I take it rabbit hunting because it is so quick to maneuver.  You will not be disappointed.  Both of my girls have killed deer that were very dead very quick.

I have both 12 and 20 also.I shoot Hornady SST in both. Both mounted with bushnell 1.5-4.5 scopes. Both shotguns shoot 3 in. groups at 150 yds. But the 20 has a lot less recoil.
The only thing I dislike about the 20 gauge is you cant find the synthetic camo replacement stocks...the cheap finish on the express stock scratches easily.

I have an 870 20 ga that I just outfitted with camo synthetic from wood. Make sure you get that for-end straight so it's not touching that barrel, and giving it an odd pressure point. My original wood stock was a bit of tighter fit, and was touching the barrel and would only shoot Federal Barnes expanders fair. I'm now shooting Win Supreme Partition Gold 2 3/4 in and getting sub 3 inch groups at 100 yards. Much better trajectory and accuracy then my 1100 12 ga. I have spent hours at the range and hundreds of dollars on ammo, and am convinced this is the best set up I could get with out buying a Tar Hunt, and who's to say it would be any better. So convinced after all my research from web sites gunsmiths, and hands on practice, I'm flying from my home here in California to Michigan for a 5 day fairly expensive deer hunt, with all the confidence that my 870 20 ga will do what I believe it can do!

both of my youngest sons hunt with a 20.  One is a mossberg 500 and the other is a 870, youth are youth models. and they shoot one hole at 50 yds with cheap ammo
