357 hogs
« on: June 11, 2007, 07:56:30 AM »
I have been doing more and more hunting with my 357 pistols the last year mainly I like their small size and weight they have  proven themselves to drop medium sized game under 75 yards which is about how far I normally handgun shoot while hunting. I have been testing out a few new factory loads the federal fusion 357 load and the bufflobore 158gr loads. I normally shoot 187gr hand loads castperformace cast flatpoints hand loaded at 1100FPS. I bagged these to small wild hogs 50lbs,75lbs at the ranch using the federal 357fusion loads they ran about 25 yards each and piled up. Both hand good sized exit holes. For 357mag hunters you may what to try the federal fusion loads out they are sort of a cross between a HP and a SP bonded bullet. They do expand well and controlled makeing a nice size hole. They also are not to bad in price for bonded ammo at around 11-13 dollars a box of 20.

Congrats on the piggy's.  How about some stats on the gun and the set up? Barrel length open sites or scope.

Thanks
Steve

I used a S&W 357 Revolver 5" barrel  iron sights on those hogs. I was stalking along a creek for wild pigs at daylight when I ran into about 30+ hogs feeding my way. There were several larger ones but I was looking for meat hogs that would fit on my smoker whole for a cook out My buddies were haveing. The first 75lb hog turned sideways about 30 yards out I used the side of a large oak tree for a rest and placed a 158gr Federal fusion load right into the shoulder knocking him down then he flipped up and ran about 15 yards and piled up. The rest of the pigs scattered fast in every direction. They were all gone before I could even cock the pistol for a second shot. Just when I thought it was all over One lone 50lber ran past me into a clearing and stopped to look around and I off hand shot him at about 20 yards away behind the shoulder alittle low. He ran about 30 yards and fell over. That all happened in about 30 seconds. Now it took about 2 hrs to drag out , gut, and at home skin the pigs out.I was glad I didn't shoot three of them after that last part!

Awsome!!!

Hopefully this winter I might get to head down to Texas, or some other pig infested area to get a couple with "my" 357 Blackhawk, and Marlin.

I love it when I get to read about every bodies hog hunting adventures!

Hey, you can't really kill anything with a .357 . . .  ;) It's too small for hunting! :o

(Way to go Terry!)

Here is a hog video I shot last night at of two big boars feeding. This is the First time I hunted this spot new feeder and tree stand I set up a few weeks ago. Two big boars one with good tusk came in about 30 minutes before dark perfect 30 yard shot. I lined up the sights on my 357mag on them a few times but ended up letting them go their way. Big boars of this size 200lbs+ are rare plus really aren't good to eat. I have a Friend who's been trying real hard the last year to Bag a Big Boar with tusk to do a shoulder Mount for his house so I just figured I will let him try this evening to bag one of these big ones. If a 100lber would have came in I would have bagged him for the smoker in a heart beat but it just didn't happen last evening for me.
