Henry .22 lever actions?
« on: April 26, 2007, 07:22:46 AM »
Just wondering what people thought of the Henry .22 lever actions? Do you prefer the .22l.r. or the .22 mag?

My cousin just got one in 22lr and I have to say I am impressed. Expected a pot metal junker but all in all its a very nice affordable gun. Wish they would spend the extra 5 bucks and put metal sights and a metal barrel band on em but as they are, they are smooth, accurate and reliable. Doesn't have the solid heavy feel of a steel marlin 39, it has more of its own unique feel which is not bad and a bit lighter. Thumbs up from me and you can't beat the price for what it does.

Foto,

Thanks for the input! I have looked at them for years but I have never gotten around to buying one. I might have to give it a try.

I have one in 22 mag and I love it. I have the blue one not the Golden Boy and I have a Leupold M8 compact 4x scope on mine. My gun is very accurate, with a nice trigger and really fun to shoot. I would reccomend them to anyone and the Customer Service if you ever would need it is great. I contacted them and asked about the metal replacement bands and they shipped them right out to me at no extra cost. I get a kick out of folks making a big issue of the alloy sides on this gun when the Rugers and Marlins have alloy receivers also and no one says a peep about them. I have a Marlin 60 I just bought used and the alloy receiver did not bother me a bit since I have had other guns like the 10/22 and my Henry with the alloy sides and have not had any issues. Like the other guns the Henry's bolt is steel so it mates up with the steel barrel and that is what counts. You cannot beat their smooth action and great accuracy I really like them.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

For the money, it is a well made gun. Have had mine over 10 years and no problems. Very accurate. :)

I agree with the accuracy comment and I think money wise they are comparable to other 22's though less costly than what the 39 and 9422 and the Browning lever guns sell for which makes them a great buy if you want a lever gun. I know that my 22 mag was not cheap but then all 22 mags seem to be quite a bit higher priced than the 22 LR versions of rimfires. I have been in forum arguements in the past that the armchair gunsmiths say these guns will not last or not as long as the Winchesters and Marlins bla bla bla. Of course I disagreed and their arguements mostly on the alloy receiver was pretty funny since most of them were 10/22 or Marlin semi auto fans whose receivers are an alloy too.  it is nice to know your gun has been flawless in over ten years. From reading J.B Woods book  "Trouble Shooting Your Rifle and Shotgun" One of the guns he talks about is the Ithica 72 and he has nothing bad to say about it. He states that all the internal parts have a ample strength allowance and the springs are helical coil so repair should not often be neccessary. I know a guy through the internet that has a Ithica model 72 which is the same gun as is the Erma model and the Iver Johnson gun these being made in the 70's and 80's and his has been flawless too over 30 some years of use.  This just shows me that they are a well made gun and will last. Like any gun it depends on care and use or abuse as even the best gun will fail if not taken care of. Glad to hear your report on your rifle.

I had the opportunity to shoot one of the H001 models and it was a slick, very smooth working little lever gun and very accurate as well, they are very hard to beat for the money

Just bought a Henry 22 s/l/lr a few weeks ago. The trigger is great and the action is very smooth. Well worth the $$.

I got the standard H001, once I got it shooting straight I have to say I am very impressed! I couldn't justify the extra 70-80 bucks for the octagon, plus the wait of ordering..
I would have to say my favorite part of the gun is ability to eat up .22 shorts, I can plink away all day long without disturbing anyone..

Marvelous little rifle...easily the best overall .22 for the money, at least of any I have used. More accurate than I am offhand with iron sights, super slick, smooth action, handy tube magazine, ammo versatility, etc. I'd love to get the .22WMR version as I love that cartridge, but I really can't justify paying that kind of money ($350) for a regular one...I can get a Golden Boy or Frontier for not much more. I got the most economical one I could (.22LR, basic sights, 18" barrel) and paid $230 for it; not cheap, but well worth the money considering the quality you get for that price. I don't think I'll ever own another semi-auto rimfire after having been exposed to these Henrys, at least not as my primary gun. Definitely a gun (and company) worth considering in my opinion :)

Best Regards,

.450Marlin

A great rifle and a product made in the USA. Not too many American products left out there these days. :o

i just bought the h001 .22 lr today, and i love it.shot a little low and left out of the box. after a few minor adjustments, from rest at 25 yards, i put 4 holes , well inside a one inch square, with two touching. not bad for open sights and bifocals. the lever action is as smooth as butter, and a nice light weight, quick pointing rifle. i will definitely buy another Henry on down the road.
