finishing limbsaver grind to fit

I used a belt sander.  I lubricated with WD40 type oil and used 50 grit and 80 grit belts.  The shape is really nice but I have slight chatter marks from the belt.  Does anyone have any secret tips about how to get a smooth finish?  I did another pad a year ago and stopped at this point.  I don't know what detail will be visible, but here is a pc:

Time to get out the sandpaper. I use 120 grit, wet, on the soft part. Then start with 220 and work up to 500 or as shiny as I want on the hard part. The tip is to have it screwed onto the stock, and wrap a layer of electrical tape around the wood just up to the pad. That way you can butt the sandpaper up to the tape and not scratch the wood. Done right it looks like it grew there. After you're done, a light mist of WD-40 and wipe it off and it'll look nice.

I finish with 220 grit(I think??) belt on a 6x48(I use zircon belt) and work the pad frozen. Buffing the pad with WD40 aas lube will really polish them.. a bit messy though..

I sanded more with 120 gr on the frozen pad and got a really nice finish.  Freezing it really made a difference with flexibility.  Worth noting if going hunting with a hard kicking rifle in the snow.  Going to look for buffing wheel before final installation.  I reinstalled pad today and need to tweak the left side a bit.  Thanks for the help.

At this point you really need a lot of patience to make it look perfect, but a LOT of rubbing with 220 then 400 grit paper will really finifh up nicely!  Just be sure to keep it wet with lube, or you'll do more damage than good.

I use a scotchbrite pad wet with laquer thinner to get a smooth finish. buff out the marks on the base plate with a palm sander & 220 grit.
