Who says Rem 7600's cant shoot?
« on: December 17, 2006, 10:32:14 AM »
Today I made it to the range for the first time with my new Rem 7600 7mm-08.  Boy, you guys were sure right about the trigger!!  Pull weight is a little over 7Lbs, and it's definitely got some creep, but it breaks real clean.  I've definitely got to get a trigger job done on it.  The trigger took some getting used to with groups starting out at about 1 1/2" at 100 Yds, but the more I shot it the better the groups got.  By the end of the range session I was averaging about MOA with a few great groups toward the end.

Here is some pics of some of the latter groups I got.  These were shot with Hornady 154Grn RN on top of H414.  It's a load that shot well in my Rem 700 Mtn LSS so I thought I'd give it a go in the 7600.  The dark lines are 1/2" and the lighter ones are 1/4"

I can't begin to tell you how pleased I am that this gun turned out to be a shooter.  I heard all kinds of claims about the 7600's accuracy or lack thereof...everything from a 2+" to sub MOA.  After todays range session, I have no doubt that with a good trigger job and some load development this rifle will be a consistent sub MOA performer!

I gota tell ya....I'm definitely a happy camper!!!  ;D ;D

Oh I don't think anyone said anything bad about the 7600, its probebly the best pump rifle in the market today, it locks up just like a leaver gun or better yet, a bolt and accuracy is amazing.  I don't own one but my friend LOVES his 350 whelen in the 7600 and I don't blame him,, he can get 1 to 1.5" @ 100 yards all day with ANY ammo and any weight and he NEVER cleans that gun.... I told him ifhe cleaned every now and then, he can shrink that to under an inch.

Before I bought the rifle I had a number of folks, not neccessarilly on this forum, say to expect 1 1/2" to 2" groups.  I think that some of that may have come from folks that shoot 7600's primarilly as a hunting rifle, many of which use very low power scopes, and really don't care much about shooting bug-hole groups.  They, like your friend with his 35 Whelen, can get 1 1/2" or so groups day in and day out with factory ammo and are perfictly happy with that level of accuracy.

I must say that I am just tickled that mine is shooting this well.  I think it is going to very quickly turn into my "go-to" rifle.

I can assume that the reason why the 7600 is "not" as accurate as, say a bolt action is becuase its usually a "go to rifle" of the hunting season.  People never usually care too much about ther 7600, its not an expensive gun and its a nice and fast repeater so, I guess they never clean it... which explains why the groups open up more than they should.

I really think if you keep a 7600 clean, it will give you better than MOA accuracy

Well, if you get one with a good barrel it should shoot. The lock up is decent & with a floating barrel you don't have bedding problems.
If I bought one, I would do the Tubbs treatment & a person should at least Flitz or JB the bore. Get a trigger job & a good crown &
it should do MOA or better.

A friend of mine had a 270 that shot very, very well. If I get a chance at a used Whelen pump at a good price I will buy it.

We have two 760's on our rack and they're both keepers!  Your accurasy is actually quite normal for this rifle when good ammo is used.  EXCELLENT!!

The 760 trigger is often described as mushy but I've always liked it.  Your 7600 is a lot newer than our rifles but can be professionally adjusted.  I'd suggest research some Gunsmiths in Pennsylvania.  I read somewhere than the Remington slide action in 30-06 is widely sold in this state and quite popular. There should be plenty of Smiths in the Keystone State familiar with this rifle's trigger.

Good shooting to you.

I own a 760 in 30-06, and over the years it has accounted for many Whitetails, Mulies, a couple of Elk, one Antalope, several Caribou, one Moose, and a Black Bear.  It was well worth the investment.  My younger brother uses it everytime he comes up to visit, because it's left hand friendly.  In fact he's tried to sneak out with it several times.  The previous owner had the safety converted to a left handed safety.  I've never bothered to convert it back.  Still want a 7600 in .35 Whelen.

T.R. has it right , take you rifle to a gunsmith and have the trigger tuned up. The trigger on my 7600 270 Win was about 6 1/2 lbs ,it is now at 3 lbs.  It was a $ 30 well spent.

The 7600 is a great rife. I have one in a 35 whelen and it will shoot 1/2" groups at a 100 yards using a Nosler 225 gr. bullet.
the only thing is, it brings tears to my eyes every time I pull the trigger. kicks like a mule.

Until I saw this thread, I never paid the slightest attention to these rifles.  I pretty much assumed a pump rifle was a 3" shooter, had a trigger you couldn't do much with, and was kind of "clunky".  Not so, I see.  Now I am interested.  I like the carbine - but wish it came in .308 instead of '06.  There may be one of these in my future.........

Cement Man,

They tell me the 7600 30-06 carbine w/18.5" barrel is at the speed of a 308 because of the velocity loss from barrel length.  I have one and it shoots extremely well.  Better than I can MOA when I get my breathing right.  So I consider mine my .308.  My 24" barrel FN Mauser 30-06 is my 30-06.

fknipfer,
I'm not hugely concerned with the velocity loss, which is significant, but how's the blast and the flash?

The shortest .06's I have are 20", which I find tolerable, but getting close to the edge.  I have a Ruger 77 RSI in .308 @ 18.5", which I find tolerable, and I have shortened some .308's to 19" and 20".  I  prefer .308 when the barrel is under 20", so I wish the carbine were in a .308.  But, still thinking................

Cement Man,

I just fired at an indoor range underground (100yds) and the flash and the noise  didn't bother me a bit.  I had ear muffs on but the rifle wasn't any louder than the rest of the guns there.  The loudest on on the range to day was a 7mm Rem Mag.  It was loud I didn't check to see what was barrel length.  It sure was louder than mine.

fknipfer,
I warned you in another thread on the pump rifle forum.  If my wife catches me sneaking one of these into the house, I'm gonna blame you!

Cement Man:  I had a simple solution.  When I bought my 7600, I bought the wife a 7400.  Worked well for domestic tranquality.  Maybe I'm fortunate in that my wife likes to shoot.  We also were preparing to move back to Alaska and she needed to get a bigger gun to carry.  Best investment I ever made.  She saved my by shooting a charging Grizzly while I was cleaning a Moose.  She emptied a ten round magazine as fast as she could squeeze them off, dropped that magazine and reloaded, then shot three more times.  The bear went down on the ninth round, I asked why she kept shooting?  Her reply was "It was still wiggling".  When I skinned that bear it had thirteen bullet holes in it.

She was squeezing off rounds so fast, it made me think of an M-60.  That's also why she is my favorite hunting partner, she comes through under stress.

Sourdough,
I believe that 7400 was the wisest gun purchase of your life, unlikely ever to be topped.  I can see why your wife is your favorite hunting partner.  "It was still wiggling"  - yup, keep shootin'.  That lady knows how to keep it together.  What was both of your pulse rates like after that?

A good pump shooter can shoot faster and more accurately than someone with a semi-auto.  I've seen that proven several time.  I know several men that grew up shooting a pump shotgun.  They shot ducks and geese, as well as upland birds, and rabbits.  So when they went to get a hunting rifle they just naturally got a pump rifle.  When they shoot they automatically pump, they don't have to think about it they just pump.  The action of working the pump backwards and then forward, help bring them down from recoil back onto the target.  They sight the target again and fire.

Never saw a 760 or 7600 that didn't shoot very good. ( It was usually the shooter that didn't. ) I own 7mm-08 and a 35 Rem in the 7600. They both are carbines and they shoot very well with my handloads. I've shot and sighted in alot of these guns over the years and the only fault I've every had is that the larger calibers kick like #&%?.  Other than that they are one great deer rifle.

My son has a 7600 in 280 Rem.  It shoots one raged hole at 100 yrds.  The trigger is similar to the Rem shotgun trigger and not too much can be done to them but a trigger job will help.  His isn't as good as my Rem 700 but it's not bad.

My son now owns my Remington 760 in 30/06 , with a Leupold 2.5x8 he can hunt deer and bear in the brush  and mule deer and elk in the open.I like having two scopes with this rifle with quick release rings.A 1x4 sighted in with 220 grain bullets for close range moose  and then a 3x9 sighted in with 150 grain bullets for long range deer hunting.

I've hunted with this model 760 in .243 for over 30 years. It still shoots amazing groups at long range.

Most westerners ignore the slide action but for me it is TOPS!
