Which .357 mag load for deer?
« on: June 29, 2007, 03:50:22 PM »
I have a handi with the 22" barrel and was wondering which would be best for deer. Also I am wondering about the range it could be used to. I was thinking about the federal fusions or buffalo bore. I would like to use 158gr to keep the velocity up but I realize that 180gr may be better. Any input you guys have would be appreciated.

As with any load sharing.legal stuff should go here,I am using a 180gr fngc on top of 16.5 gr LilGun.This load works in my two levers (92 Rossi,94Winchester) my Savage 24 (357/20) and my  H&R HandiRifle, that has been reamed to 357 Maxi. I have not worked up a maxi load yet.  All of these are north of 1800fps .hth   Doug

thanks for the info canon6 but I guess this is a good time to say I dont reload. I hope to some day but right now I am limited to factory stuff. Also does anyone have any ballistic info for the 357 mag rifle? The stuff I find is always for pistol.

Here's the ballistics for the Winchester ammo in a rifle, doesn't say what barrel length, but probably 16-18".

Brian Pearce with Handloader/Rifle Magazine has covered the 357 (as well as 45 Colt and 44 mag) out of lever action rifles.  Of course most of his article was about handloads, but if memory serves 158 grain loads can hover around 1900- 2000 fps.  The limitation becomes the bullet, as most 357s are designed to expand at revolver velocities.  There are several that are suitable for a rifle, just pick wisely.

For the non-handloader the two you mention would be great and the Hornady 158 grain XTP would be a good choice I believe as well.  Good velocity and a tough bullet.  A 158 grain hardcore bullet should be plenty for deer too.

As far as range goes, the hotter 357 mag and 44 mag loads typically pick up enough velocity in rifle barrels that at 100 yards they roughly equal the velocity from a revolver at the muzzel.  Trajectory is really the limiting factor then.  You are probably looking at 125 yards max.  If you really practice at longer range and wait for a good shot, the bullet will be up to the task at longer ranges than that.  Again trajectory is the limiting factor here

Now, let me say this.  Handload, handload, handload!  The 357 is a perfect choice for a beginner.  You can get about a zillion rounds out of 1lb of powder with the 357's small appetite.  Also, bullets, good bullets, are quite reasonably priced, often come bulk packed, and there is a huge variety in that caliber .  Further, you can probably buy a "starter" reloading kit from one of the major companies for the same price as 3-5 boxes of Buffalo Bore factory ammo.  Finally, it is fun and tremendously satisfying.  Touching off your own rounds adds to the wonder of spending time at the range, or taking game in the field.  It also forces you to become all around more knowledgeable about shooting.  OK, OK, Ill get off my soapbox now.

xhare thanks for the info on the hornady XTP, I will have to try them out. I want to buy some reloading equipment and I already am saving my .357 mag, 7mm-08, .223, .243, .270 and .40 S&W brass. I am in the process of buying a house so it will probably have to wait for awhile. I will try to get a copy of the handi article from quickdtoo also. Right now I am shooting Magtech 158gr SJSP but I dont know if they will handle rifle velocities on game that's why I am asking for info. This site is great, I will use the info I have learned here and I will be a reloader in the near future.

The other thing to check out is any of the posts by Jerry Lester.  He uses a .357 on most everything, and while he reloads, he is very insightful about what works and what doesn't with that caliber.

I use 158 gr. hornady FP instead of the HP. I want to get better penetration. I'm also using 16.5 gr. of LilGun. I've been told that much above 1300 fps you get better penetration with a FP. I'll find our this year! ::) The FPs are a lot harder to get at least where I'm at.

 YES I agree!!

I use the 357 MAXI more than its lil brother. But I can tell you at rifle velocities most hollow point bullets tend to over expand.  I have used this XTP FP as well as SPEERs evcellent GOLD DOT in 170 GR's on a couple deer and had thru and thru penetration and large exit holes. I shoot for bones with a firearm. Shoulders and the base of the neck. I still get thru and thru penetration. I found that SPEERS 158HP wouldn't exit broad side deer. I also found that HORNADYS 180 SSP would come appart on bone. Shots thru the lungs where fine as they offered little resistance.

Granted I am getting more velocity than you but not THAT much.

 Good Luck,

Midway shows these last three to be out of stock but they can be found elsewhere if one looks hard enough.

Hellacatcher has had confirmed kills and good accuracy in a Max using the 180 gr. Remington bullets with his own handloads. I would lean towards the heavier bullets for deer hunting myself. I may be picking up a .357 barrel myself soon and will probably give the Grizzly a try first.

Out of a rifle, it would be a screamer for sure, but I wouldn't take my chances on it working on a consistent basis for deer.

It will kill them NO DOUBT!!  But not an ideal choice for a rifle. The super hi velocities attainable could cause a shallow but large, devastating wound that would likely result in the game running a long distance and likely not being found.

On the other hand, if it made it into the chest cavity before coming apart, it could kill like a lightning bolt!

Personally I would try it for lil' critters like Ground hogs or coyotes and use the heaver stuff for deer, pigs etc.

out of a rifle that is micro-grooved i'd go with a jacketed bullet, either 180 gr' XTP by Hornady, or one of the 180 gr' Remington's in either jfp or jhp.    the velocity would allow that bullet to be good for probably 150 yds.     paco kelly likes both of those, for what it's worth.   i'd agree with his idea out of a micro-groove, as noted above.   otherwise i'd try a laser-cast in 180 gr's if i was on a large tract of private land shooting a barrel with standard rifling.    a jacketed bullet is probably much better on deer than a hard-cast at tearing up the lungs and dropping them quickly.    but a hardcast bullet will obviouslyl penetrate better than most jacketed bullets.    this may draw some fire, but i sincerely believe in what i've posted above.

part of my reasoning for believing in jacketed bullets is seeing what properly-constructed .224" diameter jacketed bullets do to deer that are probably 250 lbs and maybe a little more.    proper jacketed bullets are hard to beat on a lot of 'medium' game.

The secret to getting cast bullets to shoot good in the "fine" grooved H&R bores (they don't have "micro-groove" bores ;)) is just to shoot bullets that are sized properly, my 35 Remington Handi was orginally a 357Mag before it was rechambered to 357Max and I had it rechambered to 35 Rem. It shoots 200gr and 240gr hard cast .359" bullets extremely well at 2140fps and 1950fps respectively, I would expect properly sized hard cast to shoot well in the 357Mag as well. ;)

quick'

if the price of hardcast lead had held steady i'd recommend the use of a gas-checked projectile in a 'fine' or micro-groove.   but the price of all kinds of projectiles is ridiculous, in my opinion.   and the prices i've seen for some factory-produced gaschecked bullets is even worse.   i personally would just buy some bulk jacketed bullets and hope for the best on deer and antelope if shooting a handgun cartridge.   you may be right, it might work in his rifle; but i'm no longer game to experiment at today's prices.

isn't it a shame what crude-oil prices have done to this economy?   i think it's the reason the latest gunshow in medina, ohio was such a low-key function.   very few 'buys' were made.   and some of the prices were very good this last time.   yes, it's a slow time of year; but the vendors were very disappointed.

take care,

Well, there's no doubt that relaoding component cost have increased considerably in the last couple years, but so has the cost of factory ammo, and I'm sure the war in Iraq has a lot to do with that.  Metals alone in general have seen increases over 100% since I started reloading a little over 2yrs ago!!! :o :'( But there are still some decent buys out there for cast bullets. ;)

And jacketed bullets too!!

Here are the two places That I like to order 357 mag ammo from when I don't feel like messing with the local sporting stores.  You don't really save alot of money but you can find the ammo you are looking for.
