Anyone know where I can get some stuff called snakeskin ?
« on: July 23, 2007, 07:25:51 AM »
It's kinda of like a saran wrap camo. You put it on the stock or metal then run a hair dryer over it so it shrinks to the stock and takes out any bubbles or seams. I saw a guy do this once at a gunstore. But, never thought anything about it untill now. I would like to try it on a gun. But, I don't know where to buy it. Help appreciated.

Country Boy,

I bot this stuff at Cabela's last fall. I "hair dryered it onto my T\C ProHunter 243 barrel as that stainless barrel was (I thought) a bit too shiny for those sunny days of deer season. Well, on the third day it was a cold and frosty morning I was out for about 4 hours. I decided to move to another location. Came to my truck, put my gun in the back and drove to the new spot. I grabbed my gun by the barrel and pulled it out of the truck....because of the cold, that darn snakeskin crap came "un-stuck" from my barrel and the gun slipped thru my  hand like there was axle grease on my palm.

My T\C hit the cold ground with a whack....then it banged against the truck and finally down to the icy ground. Well, needless to say I was not a happy camper. I was certain the scope had to be knocked out of whack. I hunted the spot I went to anyway for about 2 hours. Thank goodness I saw no bucks. I went back to my hunting club and to the range. The scope was off a good 10" at 100 yards.

Don't buy the snakeskin. I went home that night and used camo duct tape. That stuff doesn't come off until you take it off, and then some bore cleaner will take off any glue residue.

MHO

Bell & Carlson, the synthetic stock folks, will "dip" your stock, or your barreled action, or your scope, or any combination of the above - in your choice of several camo patterns, very reasonably - and, it won't freeze/melt off.

I had a stock done, a few years ago - with excellent results.  I can recommend their work highly.

Go to their website, and click on "Creative Effects Systems", along the left side of the home page.

I have a shotgun at home camo'd the redneck way.  (at least thats a good way to describe it.)  Back home our farm and ranch supply store has this "tape" that is used to wrap horse's legs.  It is stretchy and latches on pretty good.  It has no shiny quality and actually repels moisture.  Years ago we started using this stuff.  If it comes off the gun, a little WD-40 will clean off the sticky, wipe with dry towel, and re-apply.  I can still see the beads on my vent rib barrel.  Gun does not get slippery at all.  I used a kelly or dark green, light brown, and dark brown.  Two or three wraps with one, then two or three wraps with the next.  Gun looks kinda patchwork, but has no glare and is camo'd nicely in colors similar to army fatiques.

There is also a product out there that is basically like an ace bandage. No adhesive but it sticks to itself. Just wrap it on. I have not tried it in cold weather yet but doubt I will see any problems. I'm not sure how water resistint it is though.
Just another worthless opinion!!

The tape Steve is referring to is called Vet Wrap, handy stuff to have in your pack also for your horse, yourself, as well as your gun. It does get old and not want to stick after a while.

After thinking about a refinish job and the snake skin stuff my wife came in carrying my old Bar which I had taped years ago also a shotgun." see there is nothing wrong with this"
So I'm taking the easy way out, just use cammo duct tape. I know it works and I still have some  around here some place, if I can find it.  Thanks for all the suggestions
