.458 Barnes X and Contender
« on: July 09, 2007, 02:01:20 PM »
Has anyone ever loaded 300 Grn Barnes X bullets for 45/70 in a 16 " Contender?  If so, what were the results?  Thanks, Jim

I have used the .458 X for several years.  I use the load recommended in the contender loading manual.  It has never failed to put down a deer instantly.  I can't tell you about the performance of the bullet because I have never recovered one(5 - 120yds).  From the size of the exit hole, it must not expand much.  It does appear to be larger, but not much.  I don't think any of the deer knew that it did not expand.

Hi Bill,

What did you find to be the most accurate load? if you are willing to share...I'd appreciate any guidance you could provide.

Thanks in advance,

Jim

I will locate my load book and give the info to you.  I have just returned from a year out of state.  Therefore, it might take a day or two to locate.  I will tell you that a hard cast bullet did the same thing that the Barnes X did and sure cost a lot less.
