Have any of you used Dura Coat?
« on: July 04, 2007, 07:43:24 AM »
Hey guys I just made a trade and will be getting a set of Ultra Varmint stocks. I am thinking about doing a camo paint job on them. I like what I have been reading about Dura Coat and was wondering if any of you have used it and how you like it? I don't like the templates that they offer. I would like a template set with leaves and such do any of you know where I can get such a set? Here id a link to a site that sells Dura Coat. Let me know what you guys think.http://www.duracoat-firearm-finishes.com/

I have also been thinking about Krylon cammo paint. How does it hold to solvent?

Dale,
I recently redid an old 870 pump and used kyrlon fusion paint, it seemed to do ok.  Don't know how tough it is, I don't use the 870, just did it to preserve it.  It was a rust ball.  I have looked at duracoat, but have not tried it yet.

You can make your own templates using full sheet inkjet label paper with the sticky back.  Google you an oak leaf or whatever, resize it if needed with image software, print it on the label paper.  Cut them out.   Paint a base color, stick on the cutouts, paint a top color, peel them off when dry.  Works ok.  Sometimes they don't want to stick real well, but if you paint over them quickly they do ok.

I haven't used Dura Coat but this is what happened with my one try with Krylon Fusion. Painted the plastic stock on a Stevens 200 with it. Everything was ok in cool weather but when it got hot weather I broke out the sun screen and it melted the paint on the comb where my cheek touched. I don't know whether all brands of sun screen will do this are just the one I was using. I guess that is a good reason to get rid of that piece of plastic and find a wooden stock.

I think what I might do is paint the stock and receiver with Krylon Fusion cammo paint. Then paint my 204 barrel and the 243 barrel with Dura Coat in one solid color like an olive green or some type of green brown. After I have everything painted I will coat everything with Dura Coat matt clear coat. This way I won't have the problem Slowhand had. I don't think I will be painting the scopes.

Dale - I would make a test of the Dura-Coat over Krylon Fusion before putting it on your gun. I do not know if the solvents in the Dura-Coat will melt the Krylon Fusion paint or not. Or if it will stick to it well. I have used the Fusion paint on plastic stocks and have found it to be very durable (have not used sunscreen though). It takes a week or two for it to setup completely. You can use it after a day of drying time, but it really does better after a couple of weeks (I used 7 coats so drying time took longer).

Dale

I use a pardner pump with synthetic stock for turkey hunting.  Painted mine with fusion and it has held up great.  (No sunscreen though)  I have read some really bad things about the kits that duracoat sells such as the sprayer not lasting near long enough and being a pain in the you know what.  If you have an airbrush, everything I have read about it has been good.  Excellent product, just stay away from their all in one kits.

Good luck

Here's an alternative for the metal parts...

It's not really a coating like duracoat, it's more like bluing that changes the surface of the metal by oxidizing it. Similar to parkerizing without the heat. Probably as durable or more than any cold bluing or the thin factory bluing.
