Forgive My Ignorance,
« on: September 28, 2008, 10:16:40 AM »
Is the .375H&H legal for all big game in all the parts of Africa that are still huntable?

As far as I know, yes.  Unless Tanzania has a restriction of .40 cal. minimum, and I don't think they do.

I hope JJ chimes in.

My understanding is yes. .40 minumum was for Kenya (.375 for Eland?) if I recall correctly and there's been no hunting there for I don't even know how long.

Just to be clear, the 9.3 mm is not legal in all jurisdictions.

This applies to the "big 5". Leopard have some other requirements in certain areas - for example I think 7mm is minimum in Zim. Lion may have others as well.

You probably need to be clear on what you want to do and where if you are choosing a rifle, but a .375 H&H should do just fine to permit you to hunt anything anywhere if that's the question.

Thanks, that was my question.  I'm working on a 5 gun battery that would allow me to hunt anything/anywhere.

That's strange. I thought you were so broke you could barely afford to eat and had no money for such world travels.  ???

I stand to inherit several million dollars.  If I'm still young enough at that point, I might go to Africa.

Somehow I'm having a slight problem picturing that, but, I suppose anything is possible.

I'm pretty sure I'm older than him so he could adopt me as a father figure. Hey for an equal share of all those millions either "Hummmm,  Would you be "Grayman" or Swampbeard?" would work.  :o

Must be nice to have folks with money in the family tree. All mine think I'm the one who's rich. Boy are they deluded.  ;D

By inheriting several million dollars, I'd think that making just a 5 rifle battery would be the least of your worries, or priorities.  Most people would have a rifle for every concievable purpose....ie:  here's my Red Fox squirrel middle height tree rifle for short distance shots....LOL.

Um...er... okay... what's your point?   ???
The only problem I have is figuring out how to all the rifles for "every conceivable purpose with me when I'm huntin!   :-\

My point is that I'll guarantee that there ain't a millionaire out there that's a worldwide hunter and only has a battery of 5 rifles to pick from.  They may only use one certain rifle a lot of time, but they have more than that to pick from.

You wouldn't take them all with you......If you're on a pronghorn hunt, you take the pronghorn gun, if you're on a black bear hunt, you take that gun....mixed bag African hunt, you take a couple of guns......

If you're a millionaire, why, you'd just hire an entourage to help you carry the guns.... ;)

Besides, if Swampy inherits millions, the second he get's it, he'll be buying all of the stock on Big Green (Remington) he can find, well, I guess it would be Cerberus stock.  If not, he would just open the Remington Store.   ;D

Not to derail the topic, but this is what I had in mind.

Remington 700 in .375 H&H
Remington 700 in .30-06
Remington 700 in .223
Remington 870 in 12 Gauge
Remington 504 or 547 in .22LR

I guess I'd need my Remington 700ML too.

That makes 6

I can't see any logical reason for owning any other long guns.

And there's the Remington store.....

Ah, I'm just poking at you Swampman.  You've got the bases covered.  I might take a .416 instead of the .375 just in case the possiblity of an elephant was there, but if not, the .375 all the way.

Maybe we should start a thread about the perfect battery for each of us.  I think that I could settle on 10, 12 at the most, firearms to cover all bases from self-defense, to hunting, to targets.

Not too be critical and not that most of us will ever probably know the difference or need it, but I believe a DG rifle should be controlled round feed. If I argue that too hard someone will tell me that I need a 458 or larger for DG too, but that's just my view. So I only considerd those styles for my 375. Got a Mod70 Classic.

Mauser / CZ / Ruger / Win Mod 70 Classic controlled round feed (or pre-64) / Montana if you have the money etc.

But to each their own, some guys I know have Ruger No 1's in 416.

The Remington extractor on a DG rifle would not leave me with a warm feeling. I'm using a Rem 700 to build a 243 imp, but that;s another matter.

Enjoy the process....

In 10s of thousands of rounds, I've never had a failure to feed.  The Remington will feed upside down.

Not to raise anyone's ire, but ANY pushfeed I've ever seen CAN double feed (or try to) if short-stroked and if fed slowly (like in a strange position - maybe upside down - or not in a single smooth movement) can drop the bullet right out once it clears the magazine lips. Gravity only works one way and if nothing is holding the bullet, well then gravity is!

I have several pushfeeds too, Sauer, Sako, Remington, and would buy more, so not saying you'll ever notice it, but I'd prefer not to find out.

Look this over:

http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,124863.0.html

I have friends who are PH's who shot pushfeed, most prefer/preferred not to. I've done no DG hunting yet myself, just my opinion from my possibly limited experience. However you must go with what you like; it's your rifle.

You could eliminate the 30/06 and 223 Rem.  The 375 H&H Mag. could easily replace them.

You're probably right, it seems to be the most versatile cartridge in the world.  Still it's overkill for everything I hunt at this time.

I cannot grasp the choice of a Remington rifle for a millionaire. I suppose you will buy a Korean SUV as well, and then some walmart hunting boots.

I would not buy a Remington rifle period, much less if money was no object. Furthermore Why ask people here you do not even know when you have millions? Why not just hire out the best Tanzania operation to cater to your desire and let them as the elite professionals send you a suggested list of materials? Maybe go to SCI LasVegas with your shopping list and buy the best money can offer?

Yes, the 375 H&H caliber is the minimum legal for dangerous hunt.

Swampman and I don't agree on much but on Remington rifles we do. If I were a multiBILLIONaire I'd still own Remington rifles. Admittedly they'd likely be customized but the action would still be basically a Remington. I'd not trade one Remington for a truck load of Winchester rifles. Not everyone likes or perfers the same thing.

I hate the M77 rifle, but the 10/22, Number 3, and the 77/50 are ok IMO.  I just really like the Remington 700.  You can buy more expensive, but you can't buy better.
