My newest and biggest cannon project yet.
« on: July 16, 2007, 01:02:02 PM »
Hi, well I have you guys to thank for some of the ideas for this cannon. ( tundren caps etc. ) The barrel is 18 1/2 inches long and made of 1117 steel, and all steel parts are blued with Super Blue Liquid gun bluing and carriage is oak.
The bore is 11/16 and I'm not sure of the powder measurement, I'm guessing 70 to 100 grain, but not sure. Can some one help? It seems strange a navel cannon in the desert, but I guess I'm a pie-rat at heart. Thanks again, and can't wait to piss off the naighbors a gane after the 4th.       ;D

good looking work, glad to know i'm not the only one to use bluing. are you loading for blanks, or projectiles. that will make a difference on safe loads.

S&O, very nice indeed. Lance you know your not the only one using bluing. ;-)  Would one of you fine gentlemen tell me about how many applications of this super blue you need to apply to achieve the wonderful finish Smokey has? I'm up to 8 coats so far and seem to be lacking something. I might need to try a different oil to cure it with. I was to lazy to go to the garage and used some Remington gun oil. I picked it up awhile ago and the bluing comes off on my fingers. It is still on the cannon barrel  it isn't smearing like wet paint or anything I was just wondering if this is normal ?  Once again real nice piece you have there Smokey.  Tracy

only takes two coats if you've done it right, get some blue remover.

This isn't just a navel carriage. This type of carriage was popular with forts, sutler stores and small towns.

Thanks, all. As for the bluing try cleaning the steel with denatured alcohol first to get all the oil off, and use gloves to keep the oil from your hands getting on it. that has worked well for me. Good luck! as for the powder just BOOM no shot, for now. Thanks for all your help.

Hay thanks a lot! I don't have friends that are in to cannon or black powder so I have no one to talk about this to. So I love this web-site.
Let me know how the bluing work out for you. If I can help I will.

   Thanks all  ;D
