308 handi barrels
« on: July 02, 2007, 04:33:06 PM »
Well like I said in my first post I wanted a 7mm-08 for the wife to shot. Being that they where out I decided to get the 308. So what can ya'll tell me about the 308. My main concern is about the recoil because this is going to be my wifes deer rifle. I know she can shot a 30-30 and 270 but I had to get youth stocks for her and do not know if that will make it have more recoil because of the shorter stock. I was thinking about getting a friend to load some lower recoil rounds for to try if the 150gr factory is more than she wants.I just have know idea what kind of recoil it is going to have. I am thinking that it will not be to bad cause like I said she use to shot a Savage 270 I had when we were dating and it did not have any recoil pad just a plate and it let you know when you pulled the trigger. So ya'll give me an idea on what rounds have worked for ya'll in the past and present.

I would try some of the managed recoil rounds and see how they work out of you.  Larry

Depending on the load, 270 and 308 recoil are very close, as was recommended, I'd try the managed recoil ammo too. ;)

If she could shoot that ole Savage 110 without a recoil pad and without any problems...I wouldn't worry too much about her shooting any 308 load from a Handi..Find a good load that shoots good..put a Uncle Mike's shell holder on the stock.and a little soft foam under it for her cheek...and go have fun...Pick up a couple boxes of Federal Fusion or Power Shock ammo for it..I'd try these for sure...http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=00129308A...then some of these..http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=00129F308FS1 ...http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=00129F308FS2...I don't know about these...but if they would shoot good...they certainly are priced nice..http://wisconsincartridge.com/product.asp?numRecordPosition=38&P_ID=146&strPageHistory=&strKeywords=&SearchFor=&PT_ID=70

Have the stock cut so it fits here correctly and put a good recoil pad on it. I recommend the LIMBSAVER pads. They really do a good job of removing the sting for a calibers recoil.

Here is a prefit one I have on a Ultra slug shotgun.

I have them on a number of heaver kicking as well as my wifes Remington pump in 35 rem caliber.

If you reload you can make several ‘less than max velocity’ loads.  Where long shots are not likely I use one with Re#7 and 150 Gr. bullet.  There is even one using 2400 that is a real pussycat.  Either will take a deer with a correctly placed shot.  I got two at 90 yards with the Re #7 load last year and two the year before.

I believe that your standard 130 grain 270 may have a little more recoil than your standard 150 grain 308 if the rifles are the same weight. Anyhow at my local Wal-Mart they have the small Limbsaver slip on recoil pad for $19.99. That fit my Handi 45/70 and gave me the extra length I need. You may need to shorten the stock for your wife.

My two daughters each have a .308 Survivor, and I handload a managed recoil round.  They have the simms vibration labs recoil pad.  With the heavy barrel it has very light recoil, and is extremely accurate.  I truthfully wish I would have gotten one instead of my .300 Win Mag.  It will kill anything in North America with the correct bullet selection, and it has very manageable recoil.
