Cannons on the sailing ship: "Royaliste"
« on: July 15, 2007, 11:01:48 PM »
Hello, the 'Tall Ships' are in Halifax Harbour for the week, I only managed to see the sailing ship 'Royaliste' (hails out of San Francisco as far as I could tell); and a few other yachts, really, on the Dartmouth side by the Ferry Terminal earlier this evening, *it's been really foggy today.  I took note of the little cannons she had on her, there was from what I could tell, 4 cannons with trucks and one little bronze swivel cannon, the swivel cannon had a bore I don't know about 1-1/2 inch bore and the ones that had the trucks were probably something like 2-1/2 to 3 inch bore. The bigger ones had little percussion firing mechanisms, at first I thought there were parts missing, but all it has is a percussion nipple threaded in to the breech end of the barrel, and 2 pieces of what looked just like angle iron perhaps held there with screws drilled and tapped into the barrel, in between the 2 angle iron pieces was a little rectangular or square piece of steel that had a pivot point with a screw through at some point, presumably you could hinge this piece back insert the cap, replace the rectangular piece, and * I am guessing to touch the thing off you come down on the little rectangular piece with something heavy, like a hammer or maybe a heavy wooden club. This brings to mind how you would prime it, usually they insert a 'pick' through the touch hole to rip open the charge bag and ensure reliable initiation ??? The swivel cannon was about maybe 20+- inches long in all, the touch hole on it was really big, I would estimate it about 3/16 inch diameter hole!

Best regards FT   :)

FT -  WELCOME to the forum!

Great series of pix!   Could it be that the vent was eroded or the liner missing?  On the other hand, I used to buy dynamite fuse that was 7/32" it may have been modified for that.

Capt. Glen is a good one., I learned about Hern barrels from him and got some sound advise as well early on. They are quite the living history pirate crew. He is truly a "Privateer" in every sence of the word.

No problem, it was fun, ;D some day I would be interested in getting a golf ball howitzer, just the barrel to start off. Where would be a good vendor to get one? Afaik, they are uncontrolled in Canada being referred to as matchlocks basically, so it would be reasonable to conclude that they would make it through customs, although lots of things seem 'reasonable' to me and not others. :P Regards FT :)

I live in Montreal and I havn't had any problems getting cannon over the border. But, 1 of them said "airgun" in the customs documents and that may have been a problem had it actually been checked. Otherwise they usually come in labeled as marine signaling devices and their's no problem. Ask the manufacturer to tap the touch hole and plug it. Then he can label it as non-functional replica and you can unplug it when you shoot and re-plug it when it's on display.

AFAIK the RCMP forensics dept is making up new laws quite often, it does not have to see light of day in parliament, the newest one is that there is going to be no more 'cock and click' dewats, it has to be welded up solid just like the BATFE requires. Nothing like having the RCMP looking to the BATFE as a battle plan of what goes on in Canada, although I realize that is a bit of a stretch.  ::) Regards FT.  :)
